One or both of your parents are members of a cult. You have grown into a life of secrecy and lies. You were never allowed to tell anyone about the double life you have always known. Some days, you almost feel like you are two different people with two different outlooks and two different goals in life. Will you embrace this life as an adult, or will you try to escape.
Who is the leader of the cult? Do you even know who it is? Maybe it's been a closely guarded secret. Maybe there is no one person in charge and the cult is run like a criminal organization. Maybe it is a demigod like being who uses the cult as a way of gaining believers in its pursuit of gaining full godhood?
What are the methods of your cult? How are they recognized? What is their goal? What are their methods?
- Skill Proficiencies: You excel in lies and persuasion. You have been trained in both of these your entire life.
- Tool Proficiencies: You've been trained since you were a teenager in the art of poison, including collecting ingredients and storing them, to mixing them, to the best way to utilize them. You are proficient in the Poisoner's Kit, and one other proficiency that reflects the false life that you were a part of. Most likely, this is a proficiency that shows the type of work one or both of your parents were involved in.
- Languages: You gain one exotic language, one used by cult members in their secret ceremonies.
- Equipment: You began with a set of studded leather armor, a bag containing various coins that add up to 10gp, a rapier, a dagger, and the general materials needed to survive in the world. You also have a special token that is given to all the members of the cult, one that is used to identify others who believe in the aim of the cult.
You know all the ins and outs of being a member of the cult. You know how members are recruited, and brainwashed into believing. You are known among the membership as one who has grown up with the cult, perhaps even on the path to one day leading the cult. Among those in the cult, you may be respected and treated with a measure of . . . fear?
Contacts
All members of the cult are either known to you, or you have knowledge of how to find other members as you travel. You have ways of contacting members, and you likely have a way (a token, a tattoo, a secret handshake, a specific phrase) of identifying yourself to others.
