Although not formally exiled from your homelands by mechanisms of the state, it has been made abundantly apparent—by means of almost universal ostracisation—that you are not welcome. What caused this situation can have means innumerable but tends to come down to a matter of political dissent and prodigious activism. Most outcasts have taken a political position that the state, the populace, or sometimes both, consider untenable. Not enough to have you assassinated, jailed, or lynched by a howling mob, but enough to make life amongst your people uncomfortable, restrictive and undesirable. Who is right and who is wrong in these matters isn't as relevant as the result: that you are an outcast.
- Skill Proficiencies: Choose one of the following skills: Arcana, History, Investigation, Insight, Nature or Religion and another skill from among these choices: Deception, Intimidation, Performance or Persuasion.
- Tool Proficiencies: One of your choice, possibly being part of the reason why you became an outcast.
- Languages: One of your choice, possibly of the culture that you adopted after leaving your homeland.
- Equipment: A token of the reason for your isolation: an apocryphal exegesis, a dialectical polemic, a satirical work of art, collected 'evidence' of a conspiracy, or the key to your mum's basement. A set of tools with which to continue your righteous pursuit; clothes, common; and a pouch containing the coin from selling all you could before leaving your country, 15gp.
What conviction drove you out of your country and was so important to cling to that you decided it was worth the repercussions? Was it a gross error on your part? A momentary lapse of reason that spiralled out of your control? Or was it an opinion you slowly and analytically developed, tested and prosecuted in the court of popular opinion? Do you regret holding firm or not correcting the matter appropriately? Or do you maintain your righteous position and work toward returning to your homeland victorious and justified?
| d6 | Conviction |
|---|---|
| 1 | You uncovered a vast conspiracy whose members hide in plain sight and who pull the strings of your entire society. They are evil and greedy and will bring ruin to your people. At least, that's what you believe. |
| 2 | The foundational principles of your culture are deeply flawed and you wrote a treatise explaining exactly what will happen as a result. Some of it has already come to pass and none of it is good. |
| 3 | The philosophy of your religion is incorrectly interpreted by powers who benefit directly from those misinterpretations. Your rhetorical arguments were too convincing for those powers to let you continue to speak. |
| 4 | The people deserve to be heard and you tried to be their voice. Unfortunately the forces arrayed against you were so powerful and pervasive that even the people turned against you. |
| 5 | You tried to use your riches and familial connections to change your society. When you started to amass a following and became a threat, your family stripped you of your privilege and sided with the oppressors. |
| 6 | Whilst you possess the sophia of profound insight and maybe even the phronesis of virtuous praxis, your rhetorical ability is lacking and so articulating your brilliance led to numerous misunderstandings and, ultimately, conflict. |
You just can't help yourself. Whether deliberate or from impulse you somehow manage to always be a thorn in everyone's side. This does not mean you are always right or always wrong, it just means that, at least to most of those around you, you are a troublemaker. Whilst nominally and in the aggregate it tends to be a net negative, it can have its upsides. In any social situation where there are at least two sides to an argument, you can become a spanner and throw yourself into the works. This results in a confrontation and an opposed skill check where you gain advantage on your skill check and in which your opponent(s) suffers disadvantage on theirs. What form this opposed skill check takes isn't always up to you and isn't always a dialectical, or civilised, discussion.
A point that needs to be made clear here, to both players and Dungeon Masters, is that winning is not always a good thing. It is, after all, probably how this character became an outcast in the first place.
Suggested Characteristics
Wherever you go you manage to create waves. You are the volcanic eruption, the cyclonic blast, the stable earth upon which you cause everyone to stumble. Or just the 'actually' person. This has generally made you very unpopular whether or not you are factually correct.
