The Silent Ones, also known as "Those who must not speak" are a society of sorcerers and scholars dedicated to the uncovering and safe-keeping of ancient magical secrets and arcane history. The name "Silent One" is an ancient order originally found in the ancient Sueliose Empire. They are residents of The Silent Tower, in the Keoish Empire of Greyhawk though they only nominally answer to the crown. This organization is dedicated to secrecy and typically reveal their purpose unless absolutely necessary.

The Silent Ones are almost always human, though there are rare occasions that half-elves are accepted into the order. The only "title" of the order is the Wyrd, who is the undisputed leader of the order. The current Wyrd is Mohrgyr the Old. The Silent ones are separated into two groups; Anchorites of the Tower, who spend their time in study and contemplation and are often found as advisors and tutors to nobles or guarding places of magical power. The second group are called Wanderers. The Wanderers actively seek out ancient magics and secrets to protect them from the eyes and hands of rival groups and others. Wanders often travel in groups of three, or join adventuring parties.
