A combination of soldier and sailor, war has been your life for as long as you care to remember. You trained as a youth, studied the use of weapons and armor, learned basic naval techniques, including how to stay alive on the oceans. You might have been part of a standing national navy or a mercenary company, or perhaps a member of a caravan guard who rose to prominence during a recent war.
As a marine aboard merchant vessel or warship your martial duties varied. Guarding the captain, enforcing discipline among the crew, repelling boarders and helping to board an enemy ship. Keeping light fingered shipmates from the gold or gems in the cargo hold. Also on occasion raiding an enemy coast or settlement.

As a member of a navy, you still carry with you your rank, and as have access to friendly ports and vessels, and are able to acquire simple gear and boats.
Old shipmates have moved on to other crews or even left the sea to run a farm, opened an inn or tavern, or taken up a trade in ports and cities across the world. As a result when you encounter them they are always ready to lend a hand or trade in gossip over an ale or two.
You can find lodging so long as you and your party are willing to help out with the chores or dealing with any undesirables you come across.
As for those who still sail they will grant you safe passage for a hand on the journey. You may be called upon to man ship in a storm or fend off a determined privateer.
