Blacksmith "Self-Taught" Image

Whether you were turned away by the smithing guilds, forced to smith for survival, or just took an interest in the art of metalwork, you were determined to learn how to use a forge and smith's tools and so you took it upon yourself to figure it out. It took a lot of trial and error, and more than a few bruised thumbs, but over time you became a master in your own right. Other artisans may consider your style to be crude, but the quality of your work speaks for itself, and those who need goods for a good price come to you.

When a self-taught Blacksmith Forges a weapon that weapon is able to do slightly more damage than other weapons on average. Roll twice as many Dice when you roll to attack and choose the one(s) that best suits the strategy you are going for. (ex. you are to roll 1d4 so you roll 2 of them and get 2 and 3 now you can choose which one you want in this case you chose 3 so you can do more damage)

When a self-taught Blacksmith Forges Armor no matter what kind of armor it is it gets a +1 Armor Class modifier on it permanently.

Blacksmiths can send party members on quests to get materials for Forging. These kinds of quests usually last 2 hour. (Roll 1d20 and the answer is how many pounds of materials that person gets)

Smithing Style

Every self-taught blacksmith has a story for how they got into the art of forging metals, but no two's tale ever seems to be the same. What's worse, no two ever seem to forge the same either, each finding their own unique way of going about accomplishing what normally takes years of studying under a master from a blacksmith guild. Work with your DM to determine how you got into blacksmithing. You can select a style from the Smithing Style table, roll randomly, or create your own.

d10 Smithing Style
1 Wild and reckless, you create more scrap material than you do items
2 Ten thousand strikes, you're methodical to a fault and overly delicate in your craft.
3 Tinkering and exploratory, you're always trying to build added complexities into everything
4 Speed over all else, the shape may not be perfect but your goods are always available far faster than anyone else
5 Necessity, you only ever use the bare minimum to make the bare minimum
6 Playful, you manage to make a toy out of even the sharpest of blades
7 Pure strength, you force your creations to bend to your hammering blows
8 Replication, if you've seen it you can make it, but you can't make much else
9 Craft, forging is an art and your creations masterpieces
10 Mastery, you've spent all your time making and remaking a single item until it is pure perfection

Feature: Good with a Hammer

Before you knew how to use a hammer, you spent months just holding and swinging them. It was your tool, your defence against robbers, and the key to your dreams. Now the hammer's your most trusted tool, and the feel of one in your hand brings about a sense of calm and focus. No matter what the hammer is, you know how to wield it. You have proficiency with all hammers.

All hammers gain the finesse trait when wielded by you.

Any non-weapon hammers can be used to enhance weapons to gain the trait finesse. (It takes 3 hours to enhance any weapon)

Suggested Characteristics

It takes a certain kind of person to learn blacksmithing without an apprenticeship. You either need to be cunning, desperate, or just plain stubborn to figure out all the in's and out's of the trade. A self-taught blacksmith knows what they're capable of, and often dislikes the guild artisans as much as the guilds dislike them, never able to agree on anything.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I believe that anything worth doing is worth doing right. I can’t help it — I’m a perfectionist.
2 I don't understand fine smithing. All the lavish decals and intricacies are just a waste of materials.
3 I have a habit of taking apart and trying to reconstruct anything I can get my hands on to figure out how it works.
4 I've got choice words for anyone who would belittle the work of someone self-taught.
5 I’m rude to people who lack my commitment to hard work and fair play.
6 I can get obsessive about the in's and out's of a blacksmith's work, talking the whole day away at times.
7 I don't think highly of my work, and often undersell myself because I don't have the backing of a guild.
8 I'm always willing to lend an ear and a helping hand to someone less fortunate. Life is more important than money, and sometimes people just need a repair to get back on their feet.
d6 Ideal
1 Community. It is the duty of all civilized people to strengthen the bonds of community and the security of civilization. (Lawful)
2 Generosity. My talents were given to me so that I could use them to benefit the world. (Good)
3 Freedom. Everyone should be free to pursue his or her own livelihood. (Chaotic)
4 Greed. I’m only in it for the money. (Evil)
5 People. I’m committed to the people I care about, not to ideals. (Neutral)
6 Aspiration. I work hard to be the best there is at my craft. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 The workshop where I learned my trade is the most important place in the world to me.

3 I owe someone a great debt for giving me the tools and materials to first learn smithing with.
4 I pursue wealth to secure someone’s love.
5 One day I will force the artisan guilds to accept that I am a true master blacksmith.
6 I will forge the very equipment used to exact my revenge on the evil forces that destroyed my life.
d6 Flaw
1 I’ll do anything to get my hands on something rare or priceless.
2 I’m quick to assume that someone is trying to cheat me.
3 No one meets my standards to be worthy enough for the equipment I forge.
4 I’m never satisfied with what I have — I always want more.
5 I would kill to acquire a noble title.
6 I’m horribly jealous of anyone who can outshine my handiwork. Everywhere I go, I’m surrounded by rivals.
