Cosmic Rambler (Planebreaker) Image

You travel not only other lands, but also to various planes of existence. You know a lot more about other worlds than most people. The reason you travel might be because it's simply in your nature... or because you have no choice. You have skills and knowledge that others would probably pay well to learn. Whether that's something you wish to share with a small group of friends or more is up to you.

Reason for Planar Travel

Always Moving

Why are you never content to stay in the same place - or plane of existence - for long? How is it that you paused long enough to make friends or associates - who either keep you in one place longer than you'd like or choose to travel with you when it's time to explore some new portion of the multiverse? You can work with your GM to come up with a story, possibly using the Reason for Planar Travel table to inspire your unique situation.

d8 Reason for Planar Travel
1 I am insatiable and just can't get enough of new places, the weirder the better.
2 A creature of unknown origin but terrible aspect follows me across the timelines; if it catches me, I'll die.
3 A treasure of incalculable value is out there among the planes. And if I find it, then why not another?
4 I could fill a library with all there is to learn from the planes, and I'm still on the first shelf.
5 I don't advertise it, but I suffer from a curse that sometimes hurls me to another location in the multiverse.
6 If I don't find the relic, shrine, dead god or artifact before a certain time, doom is foretold.
7 I joined the crew of a strange-looking ship and just kind of fell into the life, then fell in love with it.
8 It's either travel or be saddled with inheriting lands, a title, or a responsibility I don't want back on my home plane.

Feature: Discovery (Planar Path)

You have a (somewhat) reliable method of traveling to other planes of existence. Likely, that is your possession of a Path token - a coin of exotic mintage that grants access to a road that spans the entire multiverse. If so, you may also know of the city of Timeborne, a city built upon a plane-traveling moon that is like few other planes.

Alternatively (or additionally), you know of an interesting dimension you discovered in your travels that no one else has ever heard of. The dimension might have interesting qualities related to healing, magic, prophecy, or is simply a place you can go to relax for a while. Or perhaps it represents some future threat yet to come to pass. Work with your GM to determine the details of this little-known dimension and its impact on the campaign.

Suggested Characteristics

Explorers are never satisfied by staying in the same place for long, preferring travel to inactivity or rest. If a cosmic rambler is forced to take a vacation from their journeys, they probably spend some appreciable part of it planning their next expedition into the multiverse.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I can't help but tell people about things I find interesting - usually places I've previously visited or want to visit.
2 I'm always picking up new words from other cultures and species and sprinkle them into my speech.
3 I'm always lamenting how there's not enough time in one lifetime - or 100 lifetimes! - to explore the cosmos.
4 I've learned it's wise to make a good first impression (since I have to make so many); I'm a student of etiquette and polite inquiry.
5 It's not uncommon for me to stop speaking mid-sentence, as I recall some detail of a new trip I want to take.
6 No one ever gets anywhere without a lot of patience, and I've got an entire litany of sayings about this virtue.
7 Some people are afraid of new things. I've got the opposite problem; what makes others afraid excites me!
8 I'm an optimist, knowing that things will work out for my travels; no roadblock will deter me for long!
d6 Ideal
1 Exploration. The more that is explored and discovered, the more people can appreciate nature's splendor. (Any)
2 Aid. Many individuals and species need help. Discovering them is only the first step. Action is then required. (Good)
3 Collection. The true measure of an explorer's accomplishments is how many trophies they collect. (Evil)
4 Self-Improvement. A life of travel expands one's metaphorical horizons as much as one's physical boundaries. (Any)
5 Reputation. Over riches, knowledge, and friends, one's reputation among one's peers is most important. (Any)
6 Freedom. The chance to roam across all of creation is the best life anyone could ever live. (Chaotic)
d6 Bond
1 I recovered an odd relic from a strange dimension that I never travel without; it's precious to me.
2 My first expedition was financed by a group or patron, and I owe them a debt of coin and consideration.
3 My name will become known across the multiverse as the greatest explorer of all time.
4 I will someday show my parents that choosing to leave the family business/throne was not a waste.
5 Everything I do is for the advancement of knowledge, understanding, and new experiences for all.
6 I seek to locate a fabled dimension of timeless joy and transcendence - a golden city few find, but all hope to.
d6 Flaw
1 Whenever I begin planning my next expedition, I become so obsessed with it that everything else suffers.
2 I have poor impulse control around those I find attractive; I flirt without thinking, even if it might bring offense.
3 It costs coin to organise crossplane expeditions, and I'm always in debt because of it, some of which is overdue.
4 My substance abuse issue sometimes negatively affects my ability as an explorer... and everything else.
5 With exploration sometimes comes opportunities for the acquisition of relics from other dimensions that aren't mine to take... but sometimes I do anyway.
6 Where I lay my staff is my home, mainly because of something terrible I did on my homeworld, to which I can never return.
