Not all spell casters come from a formal education or had a master wizard teach them. These are the Hedge Wizards. Hedge Wizards do not have the formal education of average students, but what they lack in credibility, they make up for in resourcefulness and good instinct. Some are taught by their parents or other relatives and have their accumulated knowledge; others learned from magical gangs. Some Hedge Wizards are nothing more than charlatans with minimal spell-casting ability but others are true practitioners of the arcane.
- Skill Proficiencies: Survival, Performance plus your choice of one of the following: Arcana, Deception, History, Medicine, or Nature.
- Tool Proficiencies: Choose one of the following: Alchemist's Supplies, Calligrapher's Supplies, Forgery Kit, Herbalism Kit, or a Poisoner's Kit.
- Languages: One of your choice.
- Equipment: Traveler’s Clothes or Robe, an Arcane Focus, a quarterstaff, one of the following tools: Alchemist's Supplies, Calligrapher's Supplies, Forgery Kit, Herbalism Kit, or a Poisoner's Kit, and a pouch containing 10gp.
You have contacts in the magical underworld and can gain information not available to the general public. However, these contacts are not always human and usually have a price or ask for a favor. Also, you can add your proficiency modifier to your Deception checks when trying to sell fake or false magic items to individuals.
Furthermore, when it comes to being a wizard, you know how to look and act the part. You can add your proficiency modifier to Deception checks when you try to fake something about your magical history. Some examples may include where you learned your craft, who was your mentor, and faking information about potions, scrolls, and other magical items.
