You are haunted by the horrors you witnessed on the Day of Mourning. Somehow, you managed to escape physically, but the traumatic events have scarred your psyche. The ravages of the Last War may have hardened you, but memories are resilient, refusing to be defeated by sword or spell. Despite your tireless efforts to bury or flee from them, the haunting echoes persist. Shadows dancing on the wall, bloodcurdling nightmares that jolt you awake, fleeting moments of recognition in the vacant stare of another, or the malevolent whispers that slither through the darkness—they all torment you relentlessly. This burden has cast you into isolation, gnawing at the edges of your sanity. Time is slipping away, and you race against the consuming grip of this haunting, desperate to find a way to overcome it.

 
Skill Proficiencies: Choose two from among Arcana, Insight, Intimidation, Investigation, Perception, Religion, or Survival.
Tool Proficiencies: Choose one from among Cartographer's Tools, Alchemist's Supplies, Tinker's Tools, or Herbalism Kit.
Languages: Choose one from among Abyssal, Daelkyr, Infernal, or Quori.
Equipment: a set of traveler's clothes, a dungeoneer's pack or explorer's pack, a trinket recovered from the ruins of Cyre, and a pouch containing 25 gp.
 
Harrowing Event

As a Survivor of the Mourning, your life was forever marked by the catastrophic events of Cyre's final moments. The darkness that surrounds you threatens to consume your sanity, leaving you questioning why you survived while countless others perished. Now, as an adventurer, you carry the weight of those harrowing experiences, searching for answers and a glimpse of hope in a world overshadowed by tragedy.

1 You witnessed the warforged guards of Metrol slaughtering innocents with merciless precision. Seeing their impassivr faces somehow contorted with rage continues to torment you.
2 An grey mist enveloped you during the Mourning, and within it, you glimpsed disturbing visions of the past, present, and future of the devastated land.
3 The Mourning twisted your perception, and you witnessed the horrifying transformation of familiar faces into aberrant monstrosities.
4 The Mourning left you with unexplained scars and mutations, which serve as a constant reminder of the cataclysm.
5 You made a desperate pact or bargain during the Mourning, trading a piece of your soul for survival, and now a dark entity claims its due.
6 The Mourning granted you access to great power, but it comes at a cost, as it constantly tempts you to murder and destroy.
7 You were plunged into madness, losing your memory and sense of self. You regained consciousness days later, outside of Cyre, surrounded by lifeless bodies and covered in blood.
8 You witnessed waves of shadow pass over fleeing citizens of Cyre, killing hundreds and immediately animating them in undeath.
9 As the wall of grey mist approached, hundreds of fleeing people were abruptly teleported thousands of feet into the air. Their screams and the sounds of their impacts still haunt you.
10 Ever since the Mourning, you have been plagued by a suspicion that the world is an elaborate illusion, and everyone in it is merely a pawn under the control of unknowable beings from another world.
 
Feature: Heart of Darkness

Those who look into your eyes can see that you have faced unimaginable horror and that you are no stranger to darkness. Though they might fear you, commoners will extend you every courtesy and do their utmost to help you. Unless you have shown yourself to be a danger to them, they will even take up arms to fight alongside you, should you find yourself facing an enemy alone.
