Amnesiac Image

You cannot recall your childhood or your family. You don't know where you came from, and may not remember your name - if, indeed, you have one to begin with. You may not even know what, exactly, you are now. You simply woke up one day with an enormous gap in your memory, with the only hints as to your shadowy past being a few mysterious belongings and whatever skills you retain - whether they're locked-in muscle memory, or areas of knowledge you cannot explain how you learned.

Perhaps your memory was lost due to a head injury, or was repressed due to severe psychological trauma. Perhaps an evil wizard experimented on you, making you into what you are today. Perhaps you voluntarily erased your own memory through some feat of alchemy or magic. Maybe there are people who used to know you; who still remember who you were and what you've done; or maybe the only person who knew you was you, and now not even you can remember. You might quest to regain your memory yourself, or you might simply seek a new place for yourself in this wide world. After all, you certainly seemed to have found one before...

Skill Proficiencies: Choose from any two skills in the game.
Tool Proficiencies: Choose any tool kit, musical instrument, vehicle, or game set
Languages: Any two of your choice.
Equipment: One set of traveler's clothes, a mysterious trinket (choose one or roll on any Trinket table), and a belt pouch containing 5 gp.

Inexplicable Mark

Whatever events you experienced in your unknown past seem to have left a mark on you - whether a literal marking of some sort on your body that can be seen by all, or a lingering impression that only you seem to experience. Choose a lasting change your past left on you, or roll one on the Inexplicable Mark table.

d8 Inexplicable Mark
1 An intricate pattern is tattooed somewhere on my body. Looking at it makes my eyeballs itch.
2 I suffer from horrible nightmares every night. Somehow I know they're drawn from my past.
3 One of my limbs is a magical prosthetic. Nobody knows who built it for me.
4 I am absolutely certain that something or someone is watching me.
5 I am covered in horrible scars from head to toe.
6 A certain creature makes me feel sick and uneasy, for reasons I cannot remember.
7 My journal is filled with nothing but incoherent ramblings.
8 I cannot taste anything I consume, yet the wistful longing I feel whenever I eat suggests that I once did.

Feature: Echoes of the Past

Though the person you are now effectively was born the day you first remember waking up, you inherit the actions and consequences of a past self you've forgotten. As a result, people who recognize you from before you lost your memories exist in the world. They might be passing acquaintances you met doing your business, childhood friends you'd known your entire life, people you've wronged seeking reparations (or revenge), or even old enemies who seek to finish you off. In any inn or other area travelers regularly congregate, you may occasionally run into one, who will be willing to lend an ear and give whatever meager aid they can - assuming they can be trusted.

Work with your DM ahead of time to decide how much you're willing to allow these chance encounters to know of your previous life, and if inclined, what sort of life it was. Be especially sure to make it clear whether or not you're open to the possibility of past enemies returning to haunt you.

Suggested Characteristics
