A black sheep of the sea is a pirate/sailor/sea faring merchant who wanted nothing more than to sail the oceans, yet is hated by them more than anyone else.
The sea attempts to kill you at every opportunity. Sending storms your way when it was clear skies not a minute ago, sending waves crashing at the sides of your vessel that only the most skilled helmsmen would be able traverse, and attempting to drown you whenever possible.

- A piece of sentimental jewelry worth no more than 5gp, a set of sailor’s clothes, a pen and paper, 50 feet of hempen rope, a small bottle of ink, and a pouch containing 10 gp.
Due to being hated by the sea, the one thing which you love the most, you have developed thicker skin and are more resilient to harm.
- You gain the Tough feat.
- Your speed in water is quartered. If you stay in water deeper than you are tall for longer than 36 seconds while not holding on to any floating material you will begin drowning and can only be saved from drowning by another creature of your size or larger.
- Your AC is lowered by 1 while wet

As you were known to be extremely unlucky at sea, your only connections would be the various people that helped to repair your ships.
You are not well acquainted with any sailors as they all tended to avoid you.
This variant is automatically equipped once a character with the Black Sheep of The Sea background fulfills the trials of the sea, putting to rest it's curses and awakening it's blessings. The trials are a secret that even the sheep themselves do not know of, but when they are faced with the opportunity to clear one of the conditions it as if their brain acts on primal instinct they are forced to attempt to complete it.
Trial of the sea conditions:
- Reach level five at the minimum
- Overcome a prolonged period of time in the ocean away from solid land (DM discretion)
- Win at least four 1 on 1 battles while at sea
When these three conditions are met, a bell will chime in the back of the heads of all black sheep of the sea, signaling that one has passed the trials. Along with this, the sheep who has passed the trials will have their negative effects from the sea removed, and in their place will be blessings.
- Gain a swim speed equal to 10ft plus your walking speed
- Your AC increases by 1 while wet
- You gain expertise in one skill of your choosing that you are already proficient in
- Your blood gives off a faint blue glow, if you have darkvision it's range is increased by 10ft and you can make out words that are up to 10ft away from you
