You have either served time in a law office or enlisted your own means to uphold the law. Either way you do your best to keep your own record and the land around you clean or clear of lawlessness, unless you happened to have renounced your previous occupation in then you are doing your best to achieve the opposite effect.
Ask the DM what lawful groups you could have been a part of if you wish to be a current member of the law whether that includes an investigation agency or being the deputy in charge of a small town.
