Transformed Thief Image

You were revered by those you assisted and reviled by those you cheated. A thief doesn't necessarily have much honor, but they certainly have their own morals (scant and questionable though they may be). Acting as a Robin Hood type, you helped where you could while saving just enough--and maybe a little more on top--for yourself.

But you got greedy. On one mission, you stole the wrong thing, which immediately disappeared into thin air, almost as if it were never there. The world did not change, but you certainly did. Afflicted with an unknown curse, you have been permanently transfigured into a small beast or creature of some kind, such as a rabbit, a cat, or even a dog. You have found that you don't have the stats of the creature you have been transformed into, nor are you limited to the confines of what this animal can do; you have your own stats, can utilize weapons the way they are meant to be used, cast spells, and speak the languages you were able to previously. And you might even be able to fly.

But now you're a beast, and the world is not as kind to you nor as accustomed to you as it previously was.

Now what?

  • (a) padded armor or (b) leather armor
  • (a) two daggers or (b) two scimitars
  • (a) a burglar's pack or (b) a dungeoneer's pack

Feature: Long Lost Favor

You have helped a variety of people in your lifetime before your transformation. There are many that owe you their freedom, happiness or even their life. Should you need anything, you need only search a very small amount to find someone who remembers just how vital you were to their survival. It's likely they would be willing to pay you back for all of your assistance. Just don't ask for too much; you aren't as you once were.

Suggested Characteristics
d8 Personality Trait
1 I stick by my morals, no matter how they may be perceived by the outside world
2 Despite my curse, I am tempted by all things shiny and still have sticky fingers (or paws).
3 I sometimes forget that I have been transfigured, which can often get me into interesting (and maybe dangerous) situations.
4 Charm is my middle name. Despite my new stature, I am suave and always willing to talk to anyone interested.
5 I am not above trickery. A talking animal can frighten many commoners, and I have been known to use this to my advantage.
6 My transformation did not impart the lesson it intended. I am still just as impulsive and action-hungry as before.
7 Despite maintaining my abilities, I am fearful of what is to come and see danger where there is none. The world is not kind to what it can overpower.
8 I seek out protection and offer it in return. I am loyal to a fault to those that are willing to look past my transformation and see me for what I am (and was).
d6 Ideal
1 Anger. I despise my transformation. I am looking for any way to undo the curse as it completely ruined every aspect of me. (Chaotic)
2 Apathy. I am indifferent to my transformation. Whether the curse is broken or not doesn't matter to me. I'll figure it out either way. (Neutral).
3 Inquisitive. I am intrigued by my transformation. Perhaps I can use it to my advantage, and maybe I can be a better thief now. (Chaotic).
4 Adventurous. I am delighted by my transformation. I am always searching for something new and adore the chance for change. I feel I can use it to help myself and others. (Good).
5 Fear. I am scared of my transformation. The world is able to crush me far easier, making me skittish and defensive and desperate to do anything to protect myself. (Chaotic)
6 Shame. I am ashamed of my transformation. I used to be a strong and powerful individual, and now I feel I am useless and in some cases, an unnatural burden. (Neutral).
d6 Bond
1 I still want to help those that I can. I may not be able to do as much as I used to, but my transformation didn't change my desire to assist.
2 My relationships before have faltered. It is difficult to maintain a bond with a beast, even if I am not a true one.
3 I cling to those who can protect me, even if they might ultimately harm me. I am blind to potential danger if I think it might offer safety.
4 Society is no longer a place I feel comfortable. I try not to be near people if I can, and I don't speak of my former life and friendships.
5 I trust blindly with all of the charisma of a (former) thief. I am not opposed to partners in crime, especially if they can help me blend in better.
6 Being an animal has not impacted my ability to bond with others. I am still surrounded by loved ones who accept me for who I (now) am.
d6 Flaw
1 I am a game/prey animal. I am at risk of being hunted by those who cannot tell I am not a normal beast.
2 No world is built for me. I do not have an animal's instincts and cannot survive in their native habitat.
3 I may be an animal, but that won't stop me from talking. My mouth has gotten me into heaps of trouble before.
4 My attitude has depressed many before. I am often unpleasant and don't know how to see positivity.
5 I am incredibly distrustful of anything and everything. My curse was sudden, and I don't know when something else horrific might happen.
6 My transformation was my fault. I am incredibly self-critical and blame myself for everything that has gone wrong since.

Variant Feature: Natural Camouflage

It is difficult to pick out a magical squirrel in a forest of normal ones. No matter what animal you have become, it is far easier to blend into a variety of different locations. Whether you are a dog in a town of animal friendly people or a wolf in a deepest part of the forest, you can easily fall in line with rest of the animals present in the vicinity, practically unnoticeable by those without a keen eye or the knowledge of what to look for. Whether you like it or not, you are perceived as an animal by the rest of the world, but it doesn't have to be the worst thing.
