You are a member of an artisan guild, an expert in a specific field, and closely associated with other artisans. You are a well-established part of the merchant world, freed, thanks to your talents and wealth, from the constraints of a feudal social order. You learned your skills as an apprentice to a master craftsman, sponsored by your guild, until you became a master in your own right.

Guilds are usually found in cities large enough to support numerous artisans practicing the same trade. However, your guild might instead be a network of artisans, each working in a different village within a larger realm. Speak with the DM to determine the nature of your guild. You can choose your guild business from the Guild Business table or roll randomly.
As a member of your guild, you know the skills needed to create complete items from raw materials (reflected in your proficiency with a certain type of craftsman's tool), as well as the principles of commerce and good business practices. The question now is whether you abandon your trade to go adventuring or go the extra mile to try to keep adventures and trade together.

As a captive and respected member of the guild, you can count on certain benefits that the membership grants. Your fellow guild members will provide you with room and board if necessary, and will pay for your funeral if necessary. In some cities and towns, a guild hall provides a central place to meet other profession members, and can be a good place to meet bosses, allies, and potential employees.
Guilds often wield tremendous political power. If you are accused of a crime, your guild will support you if a good defense can be presented to prove your innocence or if the crime is justifiable. You can also gain access to powerful political figures through the guild, if you are a high-ranking member. Such connections might require donating money or magic items to the guild's coffers.
You must pay dues of 5 gp per month to the guild. If you don't pay, you will incur a debt to stay in the guild's good graces.
