Oceanic Nomad Image

You come from a barely known group of people who travel the oceans and live most of their lives on their boats. The vast waters gave you home for most of your life, and you are more acclimated to them than to dry land. Your tribe made a living by fishing, occasionally gathering fruits and vegetables among archipelagos, harvesting seaweed, and trading coral, pearls, shells, or extra seafood they didn't need for supplies only land-dwelling nations produce.

You were somehow separated from your tribe, either by being exiled, you left to avoid customary marriage, you drifted away in a massive storm and couldn't find your way back to your people, your people got captured by slavers, you are the sole survivor of an unnatural oceanic phenomenon like a giant whirlpool, or your people were slaughtered by pirates. You are lost and alone, and you have to find a way to deal with this radical change to your lifestyle that nobody prepared you for.

Skill Proficiencies: Survival, Nature
Tool Proficiencies: Cook's utensils, Carpenter's tools, vehicles (water)
Languages: None
Equipment: Traveler's clothes, a coin pouch containing 5 GP, cook's utensils or a carpenter's tool, fishing tackle, a fishing net, and a small single-crew sailboat of tribal origin, such as a catamaran, that serves as your shelter and transport and cannot be sold

Feature: Born to sail

You are better at operating small sailing boats than seasoned sailors; you are crazy good at diving and swimming; you can swim faster and longer than other of your race (+5ft/turn in water and advantage on CON saves against exaustion while swimming); you can hold your breath longer than others of your race (3 more minutes before starting to suffocate); you know how to get out of a whirlpool alive; the best ways to fight off sharks; what fish are eatable or best left alone; what parts of the ocean are the safest or most dangerous; and you know which islands you can find food and drinking water. You always find your way to a random island or the main shore where you can gather supplies, even without navigation tools or maps. You also never get seasick and have a naturally good balance.

Suggested Characteristics

As a child of the ocean and a member of an obscure culture, you have trouble fitting in with land-dwelling nations. You are unaware of the threats the land holds but have a healthy amount of fear of this unknown new territory called "dry land" too. Your first instinct would be to sail away from danger, but you know that the time for that is over.

d6 Personality Trait
1 I'm fully aware that I know nothing about the land-dwellers customs, and it makes me socially anxious. (Shy)

3 I always wanted to see what's further inland and how those people live who are tied to their place of birth without the freedom of living on your own boat. (Extrovert)
4 I still have my boat, I get to meet a whole continent's worth of new people, and I'm still alive. What is there to be sad about? I tend to look on the bright side of things. (Happy/Optimistic)
5 The land-dwellers have hurt my people. I'm filled with anger and distrust toward them. (Hateful)
6 I've never seen such a miserable lot as these land-dwellers in my life. I wish I could do something to make their lives better. (Benevolent/Helpful)
d6 Ideal
1 I have to get back to my tribe, work for their benefit, get married, have children, and then lead a happy and honorable life. (Tradition)
2 I do not wish to marry for the sake of my parents pride alone. I am my own person, and I will do as I see fit with my own life. (Individualism)
3 I wish to explore the land and return to my tribe with stories of my adventures that they may sing about for ages after my death. (Wonderlust)
4 I have tasted the luxuries and comforts of the land-dwelling nations. I want to become rich and buy myself a mansion, so I can live like those spoiled land-dwellers they call "nobles" (Sedetary/Sybarite)
5 I will slaughter those who hurt my tribe. (Revenge)
6 I would rush to the rescue of my tribe members in a heartbeat. (Heroism)

3 I will devote my life to hunting down pirates and evil monsters that make traveling and true freedom dangerous for people. (Service)
4 I have witnessed slavery and I will do my best so that the next generation won't have to. (Liberty)
5 I'm not going to eat fish for most of the year, for the rest of my life. I'm going to earn enough money so that I can buy and eat whatever I want and never eat a damn fish in my life again. I might be a child of the ocean, but I HATE fish. (Riches)
6 I will kill the giant whale that ate my father. (Hunt/Vengence)
d8 Flaw
1 I am covered in tribal tattoos from head to toe that are almost impossible to cover up, even on my face, and it makes it harder for me to approach people or blend into the crowds. Some people are afraid of me because of how I look.
2 I feel wobbly on land, and I'm acclimated to hotter and more humid climates . Thus, I struggle with my balance on land, I easily get a cold, and my skin feels dry. I scratch myself, and people think I have parasites, but I actually just need tons of lotion
3 My tribe has strange customs that weird people out. I'm totally unaware of the land-dweller's basic etiquette, and I commit social faux pas all the time. I also refuse to use many utensils and insist on eating most meals with my hands.
4 I enjoy hunting and fishing for sport beyond my needs and do not see the problem with the destruction of nature. Animals and plants were put into the world to provide challenges, danger, and food.
5 I squirm if I have to stay in one place for too long and get frustrated, even enraged. In this state, I may lash out at innocent people for little or no reason at all.
6 I collect dozens of useless mementos and trinkets from my travels. This habit has crossed over into hoarding, and I need help that I refuse to accept.
7 I consider people who don't follow the customary beauty standards of my tribe ugly or disgusting, and I loudly let them know about it.
8 I witnessed crimes against humanity committed against my tribe by a land-dwelling nobleman that could get him put in jail and cost his family their titles and land. He wants me dead so he can keep his crimes hidden.
