Study at the White Tower is an intense affair. There is only so much space at the top of the tower, and only the greatest or most ruthless minds can reach that dizzying height. While the stereotypical graduate of the Tower is a wizard of great power, any person sufficiently dedicated to the academic disciplines has a chance to gain the benefits of a truly higher education.
When you choose this background, work with your DM to determine how far you progressed academically, and what kind of experiences you had during your academic journey, as well as what kind of classes and professors you tended to work with. Was your experience mostly lectures, presentations, or were you left to pursue ancient tomes on your own time? Or perhaps you may have spent your time in the secretive "acquisitions department" for extra credit.
