Defining Event

Something happened to rid you of your memories. Perhaps you injured your brain, sustained a trauma that wiped your memories, were subjected to a wicked spell, were abandoned by an indifferent creator, or you've been granted a clean slate by a god. Whatever the case, you don't know what, or how, or if you'll ever get your memories again. Choose, or randomly determine a defining event that threw you into the fog of unknowing.

d10 Defining Event
1 I saw something I shouldn't have. It's the last thing I remember.
2 I was created for a purpose. Once I finished my task, my creator wiped my memory and abandoned me.
3 I stood alone against a terrible monster. I only remember the pain when teeth tore into my limb.
4 I woke up in hospice, but it's a blur. I can't remember if I left before the nurses came, or if I met the people who said they were my family.
5 I woke up on the forest floor. All I knew was my head hurt.
6 I was getting breakfast when I noticed it was suddenly dusk. My memories faded through the month, I have nothing left but a journal.
7 I woke up in a cabin one day. A dog greeted me like a friend, it's the only thing I trust.
8 I'm a solider in an army. Or, that's what the medic told me. Now that the battle's over, I don't know where I'm meant to go. Nobody seems to know me here.
9 Strange lights greeted me when I woke up. Apparently, I made a deal with celestial, fey, or similar creature. They follow me around, but they don't tell me what I bargained for.
10 I'm old, that's all I know for certain. Doctors tell me it's dementia, but something about it feels off.

Feature: Stranger in a Strange Land.

You don't know what's normal. Thankfully, you don't know what's strange, either! Being overwhelmed so much by everything has lead you to simple 'whelm.' [When faced with enough abnormality according to your common sense, you'll be able to simply expect the abnormal]. Being objective grants you a certain common sense, but it in a world where common sense doesn't much work for you, [you become more adaptable to changing environments] the very moment you abandon it.

Suggested Characteristics

You don't feel right. Your body is your own, but the world doesn't feel the same. You feel like an outsider in your own life. The people around you tell you about yourself, but you only view them as strangers. A part of you feels like a stranger. You need to discover yourself again, that's what everyone around you says; but, you don't feel like you'll ever be that self again.

You don't know if you fear the animosity of the people around you, or the inevitable disappointment of others when they find you will never be "you" again.

Variant Amnesiac.: Strangely Familiar.

You never know when you'll run into someone who knows you. In every town, there's a chance of finding someone who used to.

If friend, they will be sympathetic to your cause, and be more likely to help you--though not at the expense of their life. They will be more perceptible to [Persuasion]-type checks, at the DMs discretion.

If foe, you may be more susceptible into being tricked, taken, or attacked.

A familiar face is not always a good thing. Not everyone you know will have it out for you, but the possibility is unnerving.
