Work with your DM to determine the nature of your apostasy. Did you grow up in a religious community with a very specific faith then choose to worship a different being? Or are you a nonbeliever in a world where atheism is considered heresy?

Apostates are shaped by their experiences growing up in deeply religious societies. They may have had poor experiences with local clergy, or they may be fond of ideas and philosophies that are considered heretical to a particular community.
