You were raised around or by pirates. You have spent your entire life seeing them plunder, steal, intimidate and just live the pirate life in general. So you have adapted in both what you are capable of doing and what others are capable of doing to you.
- Skill Proficiencies: Not only have you become proficient in Intimidation OR Persuasion by watching how it is done, you are also proficient in Athletics from years spent running away from pirates that were upset or annoyed by you.
- Tool Proficiencies: Growing up you helped repair many ships so you know your way around Carpenters Tools and Water Vehicles.
OR
Watching as courses were plotted and hearing all the drunken pirates go on about where they have been and what they have seen you decided to study the old maps found around and have become knowledgeable with Navigator's Tools and Water Vehicles. What Pirate wouldn't be proficient with a gaming set from growing up with all the betting and cheating going on! (choose one between Carpenter's Tools and Navigator's Tools)
- Languages: You have not only picked up the Thieves' Cant but also 2 other languages while growing up in such a diverse atmosphere.
- Equipment: Hand crossbow OR light crossbow, 20 crossbow bolts, carpenter's tools OR navigator's tools, common clothes, a manual on ship maintenance and additions, a flask, a pirate's hat, and a pouch containing 20 gp.
You should think about why your character would have turned to piracy, and what their position in the crew means for how they interact out in the world. A captain would act almost as a nobleman in the world expecting respect and reverence versus a slave who would likely choose to be unseen whenever possible.
You come from a dark and seedy background where everyone is trying to get the upper hand on everyone else. As such you have learned to read Pirates and see the true intentions behind their words and actions. You have advantage on (wisdom) insight checks on other Pirates.
While upon the seas, provided you have the materials, you can perform or oversee major repairs on a water vehicle once with no ability check. The vehicle cannot be repaired again this way until it has been pulled ashore and fully repaired. Whenever you attempt to repair a water vehicle or make an upgrade or an addition to it, you have advantage on the ability check being made.
No matter where you go, people are afraid of you due to your reputation as a Pirate. When you are in a civilized settlement, you can get away with minor criminal offenses. Things such as refusing to pay for food at a tavern or breaking down doors at a local shop, since most people will not report your activity to the authorities.
