As a kid, you joined a gang. It was all fun and games at first, until the first time they asked you to commit your first truly evil act. You refused, and they mocked you for it. They said it was because you were a coward, but you knew better: it was because you knew it was wrong. Nevertheless, you began to fall lower and lower in the gang's hierarchy.
The final straw was when they undid a particular act of your kindness. Perhaps you saved a small cat from drowning, then they chucked it right back into the river the next day. Maybe you helped an old grandma cross the road, and they drove a horse into her right after. Whatever the case, you were done with the gang. You walked, and you didn't care whether the gang liked it or not.
But here comes the problem: You're not smart. You're not good at magic. You're not even that good-looking. What are you good at? Well, your fists, you suppose. With nothing but your brawn, you set out to make your own way in the world, and prove to yourself that only you can shape the person you're going to be.
- Skill Proficiencies: Intimidation, Medicine (more for role-playing purposes) or Acrobatics (more for practical purposes)
- Tool Proficiencies: One type of gaming set, thieves’ tools
- Languages: Common, Thieves' Cant
- Equipment: A crowbar, a set of dark common clothes including a hood, and a pouch containing 15 gp
There are many kinds of criminals, and within a thieves’ guild or similar criminal organization, individual members have particular specialties. But all you had going for you was your fists and your intimidating look, so the roles you could play were exceedingly limited.
1) Hired Muscle - You were mostly brought along to bulk up the numbers in gang fights. You still tried your best to contribute, but when the other gang boss is dual-wielding blades filled with ritual fire, you judged it best to stick to fighting the smaller fry.
2) Intimidator - A fancy name for a not-so-fancy job. Your scary outlook meant you stood and tapped weapons meaningfully as either interrogations or negotiations took place, usually by someone much more charismatic than you.
3) Bodyguard - Your training was extremely strict and disciplined, and taught you to take literal crossbow bolts in place of your betters'.
4) Errand Boy - You were tasked mostly with the dirty things the gang didn't want to do, but had to get done. Nothing of importance was ever entrusted to you, but this did give you the chance to stretch your legs outside of the gang every once in a while.
Even criminals who operate outside of such organizations have strong preferences for certain kinds of crimes over others. Choose the role you played in your criminal life, or roll on the table below.
| d8 | Criminal Specialty |
|---|---|
| 1 | Blackmailer |
| 2 | Burglar |
| 3 | Enforcer |
| 4 | Fence |
| 5 | Highway robber |
| 6 | Hired killer |
| 7 | Pickpocket |
| 8 | Smuggler |
You have a reliable and trustworthy contact who acts as your liaison to a network of other criminals. Your one friend in the gang, who you know has always got your back. Sadly, as the bottom rung of the gang, you were never given much access to the network itself. Finding ways to communicate with your friend will prove challenging.
Suggested Characteristics
As a far more humble take on the villain archetype, your character is rather conflicted. From your time spent in the gang, you picked up ways of acting belligerent and pushing people around to get what you want, but underneath, you have a far less villainous heart. You don't have to be Good, but you're definitely not Evil. You might act like a hoodlum, but you refuse to perform any acts that will bring true harm to anyone.
