You were being educated in a school or apprenticeship at your guardian's behest, never leaving your hometown. You really aren't engaged with what you're being taught, though. Of course, its interesting to a point, but so much awaits you in the great beyond. Eventually, you just grow sick of it and one night, under the cover of darkness, you run off, ready to begin your adventures in a world waiting to be discovered.
Work with your DM to establish the exact nature of your old community, your reason for fleeing and who your friends and foes are. Were you a noble? Were you successful in your field? Find out what your aggravations are and what you seek to gain from leaving home.

Their home, race and choices while out of the run often shape their ideals and bonds, perhaps more than they'd like to admit.
They tend not to trust easily and are often on edge around strangers, often leading to them missing out on opportunities.
