Some are well known for their artisanship and the worth of their handiworks, and you have been trained in that ancient tradition. For years you labored under a dwarf smith, gnome tinkerer or elder kobold trapper which was a master of the craft. You enduring long hours and dismissive, sour-tempered treatment in order to gain the fine skills you possess today. After your master died, you took over his or hers title and word soon began to spread about your fantastic inventions, how you could create things never seen before and how all your creations were crafted with flawless percission.
One night you were kidnapped by a small pack of optimistic kobolds due to your rumored skill and talent. If you are a kobold yourself then you were kidnapped by a neighboring pack. In self preservation you had to start working for them and teaching them your craft. Under some dark years while hard at work you learned how to speak their language in their accent as well as behave by their customs. When more familiar to their culture you started making some friends after a while and years later finally got accepted as a real "kobold" member of the pack, in contrast to a slave worker.
Your place in the pack grew, and you became a honored and beloved beacon of intelligence as well as innovation. Your creations had been used to defend the pack's lair, secured a hefty income from trade with merchants and also helped the kobold pack to start their own gold mine other than being used to craft trinkets of dragons and toys for the children.
Three years after becoming a real member of the pack, more than a dozen after being kidnapped, you earned your freedom. At first you stayed with the pack, since you actually had grown to like them and see them as family and friends. After a while you set out to travel, athough you came back to the pack occasionally to check up on them as well as share some of your recent earnings as gifts. They always love when you visit. The time between the visits began to expand, and now, well, it has been a long time, but you will return soon. Maybe just one more adventure and then you will come back for good, settle down and live there until the final rest.
- Skill Proficiencies: History, Animal Handling
- Tool Proficiencies: One type of artisan’s tools
- Languages: Draconic or one other of your choice if you already speak Dwarvish
- Equipment: A set of artisan’s tools with which you are proficient, a maker’s mark chisel used to mark your handiwork with the symbol of your kobold clan, a set of traveler’s clothes, and a pouch containing 5 gp and a gem worth 10 gp.
As well respected as clan crafters are among outsiders, no one esteems them quite so highly as dwarves and tinkerers do. You always have free room and board in any place where shield dwarves, tinkerers or gold dwarves dwell, and the individuals in such a settlement might vie among themselves to determine who can offer you (and possibly your compatriots) the finest accommodations and assistance.
Suggested Characteristics
Use the tables for the guild artisan background below as the basis for your traits and motivations, modifying the entries when appropriate to suit your identity as a kobold clan crafter. (For instance, consider the words “guild” and “clan” to be interchangeable.)
Your bond is almost certainly related to the master or the clan that lived with, or else to the work that you produce. Your ideal might have to do with maintaining the high quality of your work or preserving the traditions of craftsmanship.
