"Living to fight, and fighting in order to live," that is the way of your world.
War has been your life for as long as you remember, and it will be for the rest of your life. You are brought into this twisted world as a child, and you fight, trying to stay alive, to make it to your tenth year. If you manage to be one of the lucky few who make it to the end of their tenth year, you attend the Homecoming. A ceremony held for these soldiers by the Queen, where they are "sent off" to return to the world. That is all you know, and no one questions this. Anyone who has have gone missing.
You trained for your first year, studied the use of weapons and armor, learned basic survival techniques, including how to stay alive on the battlefield. You in particular have decided to become an Offseer, a special soldier which uses a flute to "send off" the unlucky soldiers who have died on the battlefield. This is a hard position to hold, having seen so many dead. People from your unit, friends of yours, and people you didn't know.
You in particular hate war, taking lives and seeing them taken. You wonder why everyone must fight, why the world is this way, but this is something you keep to yourself, as no one else would understand. Being an offseer, you are part of a special support unit, made up of you and three others.
As much as you would like to not fight, you must do it to survive. Lives are very literally "traded" on the battlefield. In this world, each army has a clock which they must fill up with the lives they take on the battlefield.
