Who trained you in falconry, or was it simply the bond between you and your bird? How do you employ your skill? Do you work as a messenger or perhaps a scout for a group of mercenaries? What kind of bird did you train and how did you come to acquire your companion? These are just a few questions to help you flesh out your falconer.

(A falconry kit must be added manually, and includes: a raptor hood, a pair of bells and jesses (leather strips), a deer-skin glove, a miniature perch, a whistle attached to a lanyard, anklets with the appropriate grommets, and a pair of pliers. Proficiency with this kit lets you add your proficiency bonus to ability checks you make to train or hunt with a Small or smaller bird)
- Equipment: A Falconry kit, a trained bird, a set of Traveler's Clothes, three days worth of bird feed, a set of artisan's tools of your choice, and a pouch containing 10gp.
The falconer is a master in the training of birds. They can deploy their feathered friends to act as spies, messengers and even combatants in hostile situations. The amount of time falconers spend with their Bird Companion and the bond they create with these avian creatures create an awe-inspiring effect. Falconers of different professions tend to specialize in a specific species of bird to train. Choose one of the available creatures to become your Bird Companion.
You can use you bonus action to command your Bird Companion to: move, attack, interact with an object or return to you. Whenever you command your Bird Companion, you must make a Charisma or Wisdom check and your Bird Companion must make a Wisdom saving throw, if you roll higher it obeys normally. If it rolls higher it doesn't listen to you for this turn.
If you already receive an animal companion from a class feature and your animal companion is a bird, your animal companion can is treated as your Bird Companion for this background's feature and you must skip this background's feature choice.

As a Falconer, you can employ the capture, use, and companionship of a bird of prey. You can spend your downtime to train your Bird Companion to perform special tricks, beyond the usual techniques of hunting and returning.
- You know 3 tricks at 1st level. You learn a new trick when you reach 4th, 8th and 12th level.
- You can learn new tricks if you meet someone who can teach it to you.
- Each trick is automatically done without the need for an Ability check.
- Each trick can only be done if your Bird Companion can see and hear you.
- Perfect Return The bird will return to you when called. This trick doesn't cost you any actions.
- Follow (Target: a non-concealed creature that your Bird Companion can see) You can use a bonus action to direct your bird to follow one creature you point to. You can track your bird by listening for its bell or spotting its tassel.
- Distract You can use a bonus action to direct your bird to distract a creature you point to. On its turn, the bird will fly to the target and take the Help action to distract the target each turn until you call it to return.
- Fetch (Target: a non-concealed object or creature at least on size smaller than your Bird Companion that it can see) You can use a bonus action to direct your bird to catch and retrieve the target.
- Shoulder Sitting (Must be a Small bird) You can use a bonus action to direct your bird to sit on your shoulder, freeing up your hand to do other things.
- Talk (Must be a Raven) You can command your Bird Companion to speak one-word phrases it has heard before. This trick doesn't cost you any actions.
- Whistle You can command your Bird Companion to make a loud vocalization. This trick doesn't cost you any actions.
- Play Dead You can command your Bird Companion to play dead. This trick doesn't cost you any actions.
- Tongue Clicking (Must be an Owl) You and your Bird Companion learn to communicate solely through tongue clicks. Your bird can obey commands and tricks even if it can't see you, as long as it is withing a 30ft radius.
