Not all roads to Heroism can be measured on the straight and narrow. Your path was, at one time, slightly more... crooked. Much of your past life was spent among the dark underbelly of the world. After setting out on your own, you found yourself involved with a criminal outfit of Goblins. Telling yourself whatever you needed to in order to justify your actions, you began to resign yourself to a life on the fringes of civilization. This worked for a time, until one day things went too far and in one horrific instant, you were forced to confront the consequences of your actions. You left that life behind, and set out to turn over a new leaf, taking with you a memento of the event that changed your course: a reminder of the debt you now owe.

1 Blackmailer
2 Burglar
3 Enforcer
4 Fence
5 Highway robber
6 Hired killer
7 Pickpocket
8 Smuggler

Feature: Ear to the Ground

Regardless of the... work... in which you were engaged, one commodity is essential to your former trade: information. Whether disguised as a potential client or skulking in the corner of a crowded pub, you became adept at the art of picking out the juiciest conversations and mining them for useful information. Caravan routes, guard movements, local gossip, less reputable distributers of goods... you have a knack for finding the information you are looking for. When actively pursuing a lead, make an Investigation roll with Advantage to find the proper thread to pull, with the DC secretly set by the DM. A success will point you in the right direction, or give you useful additional information about your chosen course of action. However, one can never believe everything one hears, and a failure may send you off in the wrong direction - or worse.

Suggested Characteristics

Although you have left your criminal past behind you, that time made a mark which remains. Your deeds, complicit or explicit, have followed you into your new life, and some shadows may still linger. Driven by your newfound convictions, you have set out to navigate the next chapter in your story. However, the specter of your guilt and shame (or perhaps even the temptation of the life you once knew) is never far behind.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I always have an escape plan.
2 I can never enter a busy room without worrying someone there knows who I used to be.
3 The first thing I do in a new place is note the locations of everything valuable—or where such things could be hidden.
4 I would rather make a new friend than a new enemy.
5 I am incredibly slow to trust. Those who seem the fairest often have the most to hide.
6 I will always bear the burden of risk over someone else: I don't deserve the luxury of safety.
7 The best way to get me to do something is to tell me I can’t do it.
8 I blow up at the slightest insult.
d6 Ideal
1 Honor. I have sworn a sacred oath to uphold the laws I once flaunted so carelessly. (Lawful)
2 Nihlism. The world is ruled by anarchy, and nothing we do really matters. (Chaotic)
3 Balance. I have done much wrong in my life. I have an obligation to offset my past deeds. (Good)
4 Retribution. I am capable of terrible things. I will show the ones who led me down that path precisely how terrible. (Evil)
5 Self-determined. I don't need any one or anything to define right and wrong for me. I hold my own council. (Neutral)
6 Redemption. There’s a spark of good in everyone. Even me. (Good)
d6 Bond
1 Someone took me in when I was trying to get back on my feet. I owe my life to them.
2 I left something dear to me behind when I left my former life.
3 The trinket I carry belongs to someone else. I have an obligation to return it.
4 Someone I care about is still caught up in the life I left.
5 I’m guilty of a specific terrible crime. I hope I can redeem myself for it.
6 I have had to travel far from home to escape my past. I miss it terribly.
d6 Flaw
1 The ease and familiarity of my past life calls to me.
2 If there is an easy way out, I will take it.
3 I am consumed by guilt and shame. I cannot seem to move past it.
4 I have left my life of crime behind, but not the addiction I acquired during that time.
5 I have no faith in the justice system, and have no issue dubbing myself judge, jury, and (if I deem it necessary) executioner.
6 I don't actually care about the harm I inflicted, I only care about self preservation. That's why I left.

Variant Feature: Well-Traveled

Due to the nature of your previous work, you have an intimate knowledge of the major paths and roadways of the land. When plotting a course along open road, you may Investigate with Advantage to discern the best course (you must declare safest, most direct, or least conspicuous before rolling this test). In addition, if care is taken while making camp, anyone searching for you or your party investigates with Disadvantage (you know what to look for, and you know how to cover your tracks).
