You never really knew your birth parents, if at all. Whether they couldn't afford to raise you, you were left behind after their deaths, or even taken unwillingly from them, you were raised by what would normally be foreigners: to you, though, they're family. It could be a group of people from a different civilization from your own, or perhaps an entirely different race, but they've brought you up as one of their own. You've learned their customs, their traditions, their way of life, and if you didn't look any different, it would be night impossible for someone to know that you weren't a true native.
- Skill Proficiencies: From a young age, your parents taught you everything they could about their culture to ensure that you ended up as one of their own. You gain a proficiency in your assumed culture's most predominant skill.
In addition, you eventually discovered that you were not a native of your people. If your parents told you and taught you how to blend in better, gain a proficiency in Deception. If you discovered on your own, gain a proficiency in Insight.
- Tool Proficiencies: You are proficient in the tools of your parents' trade.
- Languages: In addition to their own language, your family made an effort to ensure that you also knew your native tongue.
If your adoptive parents use a different language than your own race's, choose both.
Despite initially being regarded as an outsider, you have found a home among your (new) people. They treat you as one of their own, and you are well regarded in their community. You have an easier time making friends with others from your family's culture and/or race, and although there are some who might still be skeptical, extended conversations with such people tend to help ease their distrust.
Suggested Characteristics
The circumstances of your adoption will affect the characteristics you take on later in life, so consider how your character might regard their circumstances. Did they struggle during their upbringing, leading to intrinsic trust issues? Or were they granted a rather pleasant upbringing, allowing them to more easily make friends? If they were ever to return to their place of birth, would they be accepted?
