Mystic Botanist Image

Those who spend enough time among magic flora are bound to find something remarkable. Through your constant close contact and interactions with cursed or enchanted vegetation, you've attuned your magical ability to be especially strong when channeled through earth and plant life. Your powers often have dramatic effects on any plants you come into contact with as well as any organisms that come into contact with said plants. Whether pushed away from society or seduced by whispers behind the leaves, you now seek refuge within the greenery and have mastered the art of harnessing nature to your benefit.

Verdure Fixation

You retreated into plant life for one reason, but you stayed for another. Choose the aspect of nature that has the greatest effect on you or roll on from the Verdure Fixation table.

d4 Verdure Fixation
1 My obsession with hallucinogens has left me in a constant, foggy delirium.
2 People that I care about are afflicted and I know that the cure is somewhere in nature.
3 I discovered something... incredible beneath the roots. I must learn more about it for myself.
4 Someone wronged me and I will have my revenge. One of these mystical plants MUST be what I seek.

Feature: Rooted Soul

Where people have failed you, you've learned to reach out to nature, and nature reaches back. Long sentences are usually met with silence, a single-word thought is often enough to call the largest tree to your aid. The thought "help" could result in anything from being pointed toward a key item or location, to something being pulled from deep within the earth, to the plants themselves attempting to physically offer you defense or offense. You find yourself with highly-improved traversal ability when in close contact with plant life of medium size or larger.

Spell List

Branching Divination: Reach out to the surrounding flora with a thought or intention, resulting in the plant life responding in varying ways.

Uncanny Shift: Traverse an area considerably more effectively when in close contact with substantial plant life.

Branching Augury: Tap into inner dark magic to draw fantastic and grotesque plant creations to the surface.

Spell Level Spells

Branching Divination: Five (5) times per long rest, a sorcerer can reach out to surrounding flora with an intention or thought and receive a response in varying degrees of helpfulness, determined by a nature and arcana check. Such intentions are limited to five (5) words or less. Mystic Botanists using this ability have advantage on both while Overgrowth Haggards have disadvantage.

Uncanny Shift: When surrounded by medium to large plant life (i.e. in a forest) or close to a larger plant (i.e. next to a large tree), movements such as running, climbing, jumping, etc. are heavily buffed until you exit those conditions.

  • Movement speed is increased by half
  • Roll with advantage on athletics checks
  • Moving from in front of an enemy to directly behind them leaves to enemy open to an opportunity attack with advantage.

After exiting conditions that unlock this ability, it is on cooldown until after a long rest.

Branching Augury: Five (5) times per long rest, the sorcerer can channel its magic into any surrounding plants or earth and call forth diverse effects to varying degrees of success, determined by a nature or arcana check. Overgrowth Haggards using this ability have advantage on both while Mystic Botanists have disadvantage.

These effects are performed as spells, but only consume a spell slot when used in quick succession, or in two (2) or more consecutive combat turns.

Suggested Characteristics

You have always felt at home away from other people, instead immersing yourself in nature and its wildlife. After a long time of not having to speak, you find yourself relying more on an intimidating presence to keep yourself safe, though you also are able to choose your words more carefully than most, lending an air of charisma to yourself in social situations. When all else fails you look to nature to help you conceal the things you lack.

As a Mythic Botanist, you are more likely to reach out to nature with benevolence and use defensive plant manipulation. As an Overgrowth Haggard, you are more likely to bend nature to your benefit and use offensive plant effects. Any effect, however, can be cast by either variation, at the discretion of the DM.

Variant Mystic Botanist: Overgrowth Haggard

A plant-attuned sorcerer who has a deep-seated hatred for others will eventually start surrounding themself with solely cursed plants, using them to further corrupt the landscape and wildlife. Soon enough, nothing is left in them but a gnawing void that dark magic eagerly fills. The sorcerer is broken down, both physically and mentally, into a gnarled, hobbling creature with an arsenal of grim plants and dark magic at their disposal. Haggards, like Hags, can choose to hide behind a more approachable visage, usually taking the form of a lanky, slightly emaciated individual. The transformation is often weaponized as a ritual by corrupt magic users, preying on mad and manic sorcerers in order to have a Haggard under their control. An Overgrowth Haggard favors Hagspawn in appearance, imposing a feeling of indifference, if not slight interest, on Hag variants.

Variant Feature: Crimson Thumb

The big-ticket item for those undergoing this transformation... or those forcing it onto others. An Overgrowth Haggard commands the ability to forcefully bend nature to its will for the sole purpose of inflicting harm. The possibilities for this power extend only as far as the user's imagination. Some examples are listed below:

  • Repair partial corpses and skeletons with vines and roots for a new minion
  • Buff yourself, your companions, and your minions with extra vine limbs and bark armor
  • Summon giant, carnivorous plants or whipping, thorny vines
  • Set a flower bud to burst and release a pollen smokescreen to conceal your movement, or release toxic spores to poison enemies
  • Bloom highly pungent corpse flowers from a fallen creature to suffocate a group of enemies
