Mad Scientist Image

Nothing will stop you from unlocking the secrets of life, the universe, and everything! Some may call you mad for your quest, but you care not what the masses say now -- only what they'll say once your masterpiece has been shared with the world. To achieve your dreams, you've locked yourself away in your home, cave, or secluded tower for many years, with little to no company, but that just makes you more focused. Theoretically speaking.

Skill Proficiencies: Arcana, Insight
Tool Proficiencies: Choose from alchemist's supplies, poisoner's kit, or tinker's tools.
Languages: Two of your choice.
Equipment: One set of artisan's tools, a vial of acid, a broken bit of gadgetry, a hammer, a penknife, a set of burned or otherwise dirtied common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp.

Area of Expertise

You focused your efforts on a particular area of research. Choose the research you conducted, or roll on the table below.

d8 Area of Expertise
1 Alchemy or chemistry
2 Artificing and/or magical apparatuses (weaponry, transportation, etc)
3 Augmentation (prosthetics, biotechnology, etc)
4 Greater natural forces (gravity, time, space, etc)
5 Lesser natural forces (the elements, the magical weave, the planes, etc)
6 Poisons, toxins, and venoms
7 Astronomy, planar travel, or interstellar travel
8 Spell development (one school of your choice)

Feature: Wild Mind

Thanks to your years of seclusion and feverish work, you have an almost feral look to you even when you are at your most presentable. Most people who see you peg you as a person of great intelligence, but are also rather afraid of you. You can get away with harmless acts of indiscretion (such as being rude to a noble, forgetting to pay at a tavern, or making a ruckus at night). However, if you push your luck one too many times or commit a truly unconscionable act (such as killing a person in broad daylight), the people will likely attempt to run you out of town.

Suggested Characteristics

Thanks to the strange life you've chosen to lead, you're hardly like most folk. Life in isolation, often with little but your experiments to keep you company, has molded you into an altogether unusual person.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I cannot form a comprehensible statement to save my life. My mind moves in so many directions that my words can't keep up!
2 I'm a little (or a lot) deaf in one or both ears from repeated explosive experimentation, so I tend to SHOUT EVERYTHING.
3 Years in the dark have degraded my eyesight, so I need to wear unbelievably thick glasses or polarized lenses (that I made myself) wherever I go.
4 I'm an absolute chatterbox, and I never shut up, especially if you get me started on my work.
5 My hands are always occupied, fiddling with this and that.
6 I always use big fancy words, even if I don't actually know what they mean.
7 I have terrible social anxiety.
8 I'm very, very paranoid. Everybody wants to kill me and steal my research!
d6 Ideal
1 Advancement. I've made this great scientific breakthrough (or I'm certainly close), and I can't wait to share it with the world! (Any)
2 Power. I want to become the most powerful person in the world -- and crush the masses under my feet. (Evil)
3 Peace. My work, once complete, will bring enlightenment and peace to a fraught world. (Good)
4 Knowledge. I don't care what my findings are used for or how; I'm just doing this for the thrill of learning. (Neutral)
5 Fame. I care less about the contents of my research and more about the glory I'm going to get for it. (Chaotic)
6 Justice. I won't let my research be known to the world until I know for sure that it will be used lawfully and properly. (Lawful)
d6 Bond
1 I had planned to experiment on an animal, but I fell in love with it and decided to keep it as a pet.
2 The only person who truly understands me or my work is the chambermaid I hired to tidy up after me.
3 I have a neighbor who loves (or hates) me for keeping their life interesting, due to the strange smells and loud bangs that issue from my residence on the regular.
4 The local children are always peering in my windows to see what I'm doing, and I appreciate their interest.
5 Most of my family has effectively disowned me... except for that one cousin, who often writes me letters asking about my work.
6 The local magistrate considers me to be an exceptional nuisance.
d6 Flaw
1 When people ask for clarification on something, I just don't give it. Shouldn't they know this already?
2 I've hit a major stumbling block in my work, but I can't just tell people that.
3 I distrust the advice of others like me (wizards, tinkers, etc). None are as smart as me, so their words are surely useless.
4 I have absolutely no filter. At all. If the king wears a stupid hat, well, who am I to say it looks nice?
5 To hell with nicety and social mores! I'm rude and I'm proud!
6 I'm a braggart of the highest degree, and I never stop talking about myself.
