If one (or both) of your parents died before you were born or within a month after you were born, you are considered by the people of Durion Varden to be an “Orik,” which translates to something along the lines of “Honored Bastard.” You are given the dead parent's given name as your given name, ending it with the suffix "orik." So the son of Arkan would be called Arkanorik, or A'rik for short. Society works hard to make up for the fact that you'll never know the deceased parent(s). It is considered a great honor to be of service to an Orik, but it is considered a great evil if an Orik abuses their standing for personal gain.
- Skill Proficiencies: Honored Bastards can choose two skills from this list to become proficient with: Insight, Intimidation, Performance, Perception, and Persuasion.
- Languages: You learn two languages of your choice.
- Equipment: An Explorer's Pack, a set of Clothes, Common, and a pouch containing 10 gp.
If a neutral or friendly intelligent creature learns your given name, they will usually try to be helpful to you as much as they can within reason. They will tend to treat you with sympathy and deference, especially if they are of lawful or good alignments.
