Twin Mind Image

At some point during your life, you realised that your body did not belong to you alone. You may be unsure as to the origin of the entity hiding within the recesses of your mind or perhaps you put it there yourself: another mortal being bound to you, a benevolent or malevolent thing, or a mindless beast waiting for its opportunity for control. It is by sheer willpower that you remain in control of your own body.

While you control your body, the being within has access to you. Whispers in the back of your mind, knowledge of the events that took place without you ever being there, and urges that you would normally not have suddenly spring into your mind. In the rare occurrences that the being takes control, you feel imprisoned yet comforted within your own body. You can see glimpses into the world, you can clearly perceive the thoughts of the other being, you can whisper your own voice into the beings mind, and you can obtain information and peer into the memories of the being that now possess you.

While being trapped within your body is not ideal, it can have its uses.

When you choose this background, work with your DM to determine the nature of the entity that you are bound to, how capable you are at controlling or suppressing it, and what kind of experiences you had through the eyes of this entity while it claimed control. Was it a twin that died in the womb, a celestial or fiend bound to you at birth, or an ancient spirit seeking to complete unfinished business? Perhaps it was a loved one that you chose to bound to your mind at the time of their death, or a monster you hunted and is now bound to you through a curse.

Skill Proficiencies: Choose two Skills: choose one - Arcana, History, Nature, Religion, Medicine and choose one - Athletics, Acrobatics, Stealth, Animal Handling, Performance
Languages: Choose an Exotic Language: Abyssal, Celestial, Deep Speech, Draconic, Primordial, Sylvan, Undercommon
Equipment: A double sided coin, a scholar's pack, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp.

Feature: Dual Experience/Struggle/Rude Awakening

Dual Experience: Having two separate personalities throughout your life has allowed you to be more well-rounded in a variety of abilities.

You gain two Ability Score points: choose 1 point for Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution and choose 1 point for Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma. Each point is input into the Other Modifier section for your score calculations. Assign 1 point to the primary soul and 1 point to the secondary soul. Should one of the souls be removed from your mind, if possible, the Ability Score assigned to the removed soul is removed as well. Should the soul be regained, the Ability Score assigned to the soul is also regained.

Struggle: As you are not the only soul that inhabits your mind, you struggle to maintain control of your body after each long rest. Roll 1d20 to maintain control of your body.

  • 1-5 - The suppressed soul manages to successfully gain control of the body. All of your actions, decisions, and your behaviour is that of the suppressed soul.
  • 6-20 - The current soul inhabiting the body manages to successfully maintain control of the body. All of your actions, decisions, and your behaviour is that of the current soul.

Rude Awakening: If you go unconscious, roll 1d20 to maintain control of your body.

  • 1-15 - The suppressed soul manages to successfully gain control of the body. All of your actions, decisions, and your behaviour is that of the suppressed soul.
  • 16-20 - The current soul inhabiting the body manages to successfully maintain control of the body. All of your actions, decisions, and your behaviour is that of the current soul.

The following effects occur based on how you are placed unconscious and only if the suppressed mind gains control of the body:

Health drops to 0 You regain consciousness and your health goes to 1 hit point; while in combat, you can move your full movement speed without imposing an attack of opportunity from the creature that had knocked you unconscious.
Effects of a spell Roll against the spells DC with advantage, on a success you regain consciousness.

Suggested Characteristics

Beings that have twin minds have split personalities. They have the tendency to have opposite alignments and ideals, however this is not always the case. Overtime they can influence each other and share a goal, or depending on the origin of the minds can be of the same alignments. However, they always have different solutions to the same problems and can cause frustration to the suppressed mind should a solution fail to be solved.
