Sacrifice Image

You were raised with the full knowledge that you would be sacrificed to a monster, a deity, a demon, a society, or something else still. Your whole life was spent devoted to becoming the best sacrifice you could be--either by maintaining ritual purity, reaching a certain size, accomplishing specific feats, undergoing rites, or any number of other preparations designed to perfect your body, soul, mind, and spirit for their purposes. You have lived a very special life, one weighty with meaning and purpose. Even if your end will be gruesome, even if your afterlife will be torture, you are proud to know that your death will have meaning, pity those whose lives will end poorly, and are terrified to think that you might ever fall before your appointed place and time.

Choose what you will be sacrificed to and why, and work with your DM to determine how this affected your upbringing. Were you raised in spiritual purity by priests devoted to a demonic order? Did your village experience so much blight and hardship that it felt it needed to end your life to appease a vengeful god? Or maybe you had to work your body to perfection so a wandering spirit could replace your soul with theirs?

Also, work with your DM to determine how you must maintain your sacrificial status. If you cannot hold yourself to the standards required of you as a sacrifice, you lose access to the feature and proficiencies granted to you by this background (but not the equipment).

Feature: Branded Goods

By producing your icon related to the target of your sacrifice, anyone who worships as part of a religion, or any member of a race with a patron deity, recognizes you as "belonging" to the target of your sacrifice. While these people are reluctant to treat with you, they are also reluctant to cause you harm and risk angering a god, devil, or people. Although they will not grant you shelter, they will also not try to harm you or impede your progress without good reason. This "hospitality" extends to you and you alone. (If you are a sacrifice intended for something on the Material Plane, races who regularly interact with that target are affected by this feature instead of those with a patron deity.)

Under no circumstances other than your appointed time of sacrifice will a member of the society to which you are pledged try to harm you, so long as you have shown them your icon. Generally, such people will treat you well, or at least according to the principles of your sacrifice. Of course, if you break these principles, these people will likely either try to force you to become pure again, or they will attack you. Note that it does not necessarily go against the terms of your sacrifice if you try to escape these people--you would only break your oath if you have explicitly stated that you would not leave them.

Those who are lawfully good will generally support you regardless of your beliefs, sacrifice target, or actions, and you can make small requests of them without charge, so long as completing these requests would not cost them any money or supplies (though they will feed you and only you once; after feeding you, they will grant no more requests, and to ask for food you must not have asked them for anything else).
