You were a servant of some being or beings of immense, and likely evil, power. You were likely not there of your own will and probably horribly mistreated during your time there. You always got stuck with the less desirable tasks that your master needed done. When the enemies of your master came knocking, you were sent to the front lines, not to defeat the foes, but to act as fodder before them.
Now, you have found yourself in a new situation. Maybe you have broken free of your master's yolk, or perhaps you have just been sent on an assignment that leaves you with minimal supervision. Either way, you now find yourself out from under their thumb and with a degree of personal freedom you have never had before. What you do with that freedom is entirely in your own hands.
- Skill Proficiencies: Minions are often assigned to scut work. From mucking out stables to climbing in unsafe conditions for cleaning, you never got the easy jobs. To represent the kind of unfavorable tasks you were assigned, you gain skill proficiency in Animal Handling and Athletics.
- Tool Proficiencies: While you were always assigned the worst jobs, there was one thing you were always good at. Whether your master recognized your talent or not, it was your specialty. Gain proficiency in one type of Artisan's Tools of your choice from among the following: Brewer's Supplies, Carpenter's Tools, Cobbler's Tools, Cook's Utensils, Leatherworker's Tools, Mason's Tools, Painter's Supplies, Potter's Tools, Smith's Tools, Tinkerer's Tools, Weaver's Tools, or Woodcarver's Tools.
Alternatively, you may be proficient in one type of Game or instrument that you practiced in your very limited free time.
- Languages: While minions come in every shape and size, there are two races that are unfortunate enough to be enslaved more often than any other: Goblins, and Kobolds. As the most common minions in the world, their languages are the unofficial tongues of all minions. As a minion yourself, you are fluent in your choice of either Goblin or Draconic from your time among them.
- Equipment: A dagger, provided more as a tool than for self defense.
The Tool, Game, or Instrument you chose as your proficiency from this background, of poor but functional quality as you were never given the best as a minion.
Common Clothes, only the cheapest and least comfortable fabrics for the minions
Your Master's Mark, which might come in the form of a brand, an earring, or some other mark signifying that you are, or at least were, owned by the individual who marked you.
A Belt Pouch containing 5gp, which may or may not have been stolen from your master on your way out of their domain.
You know what it's like to be a minion. You know the kinds of things that a minion must do. You know that most individuals who keep minions likely can't tell them apart. Most importantly, you know how a minion might avoid the unwanted attentions of a cruel master.
As long as a group of minions contains members of your race, or if you are able to pass yourself off as a member of their race, you can easily blend in among them without raising suspicion as long as you aren't caught doing anything overtly against the interests of their master.
