When you examine, smell, or taste most potions, if you do not know the potion, you can often assume primary elements to creating it and where those elements may have come from. This information comes from your years of experimentation and documentation of such creations. Your DM may rule that some elements you have never encountered or used, based on their origin, or that the percentage of an element is too small for even your keen senses to detect.
