Outcast Image

You were once part of a family or clan, perhaps commoners with their own way of life. However, they exiled you, forcing you to live alone and survive by yourself. Whether because of your appearance or your upbringing, or perhaps something else entirely, you've been shunned or ostracized for much of your recent life. You try to fit in with society as much as possible without drawing attention to yourself, but your differences always seem to creep up on you, making it difficult for you to find a home in any one place. You've found friends here and there, but for the most part you spend your time in solitude, not speaking much to anyone outside of what's necessary.

Skill Proficiencies: You're no stranger to going through life the hard way, and you're accustomed to life at the bottom of the societal totem pole, even if you might resent it. In fact, this way of life has taught you some skills that you may not have had if things were different. You are proficient in Survival skill checks, and may choose one of the following skill proficiencies as well: Animal Handling, Deception, Investigation, Medicine, or Stealth.
Tool Proficiencies: You've learned to make do with what you're given, and you gain proficiency with two things from the following list: Cook's Utensils, Potter's Tools, Tinker's Tools, Woodcarver's Tools, Disguise Kit, Herbalism Kit, or Thieves' Tools.
Equipment: An outcast's pack (includes a backpack, a lamp, a flask of oil, an empty flask, 5 days of rations, one piece of chalk, a blanket and a bedroll), a set of common clothes, a set of traveler's clothes, a trinket from your childhood,  and a pouch containing 6gp.

Reason For Outcasting

No one is shunned for no reason - or, heck, maybe you were. Every societal reject has a sob story that they carry behind their hardened mask.

d6 Reason For Outcasting
1 I was born a different species to the rest of my family. They thought I was too strange to be their child.
2 I committed a terrible crime that shocked my community, and they banished me as a result.
3 Even at a young age, I manifested strange talents and/or abilities that made most folk uncomfortable around me.
4 I fell in love with someone from a rival group, and my community forced me to leave because of it.
5 Something about me or my actions has put me on the bad side of someone in a prominent position of power - and no one wants to affiliate themselves with that.
6 I don't know why I'm treated with such disdain. As far as I can remember, it's just always been this way.

Feature: Waste Not, Want Not

You have no trouble finding ways to survive in an urban environment, from the most crowded city street to a long-abandoned ghost town. You can make a meal out of almost nothing (though it may not always taste great) and you're used to sleeping wherever is available - even if it means sleeping on the cold, hard ground.

Suggested Characteristics

Exiled either by choice or by force, Outcasts do not usually relate well to others. Most outcasts are not familiar with their family and have spent minimal time working with strangers. The bonds they form with their adventuring companions are the closest to true friendship that many will ever see.

d6 Personality Trait
1 I have no qualms about eating spoiled food or living in unsanitary conditions - in fact, I might even prefer it that way.
2 I am incredibly slow to trust people. Those who seem the fairest often have the most to hide.
3 I love feeling like I belong, and will usually go along with whatever is suggested to me as long as I feel included.
4 I have a strong sense of fair play and always try to find the most equitable solution to arguments.
5 I feel tremendous empathy for those who suffer.
6 I tend to treat others as they treat me, repaying kindness with kindness and disrespect with disrespect.
d6 Ideal
1 Respect. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. (Good)
2 Charity. I always try to help those in need, no matter what the personal cost. (Good)
3 Spite. Those fools will rue the day they threw me out. (Evil)
4 Fairness. No one should get preferential treatment before the rules, and no one is above the rules. (Lawful)
5 Belonging. I need to find myself a place to belong. (Neutral)
6 Independence. I must prove that I can handle myself without my family. (Chaotic)
d6 Bond
1 I have a family, but I have no idea where they are. One day, I hope to see them again.
2 One or two people (maybe more) have always shown kindness to me when others wouldn't, and I could never fully repay them for what they've done for me.
3 My family or friends have stuck with me through everything, and I'd sooner die than willingly abandon them.
4 One day I will return home and prove that I am the greatest of them all.
5 No one else should have to endure the hardships I've been through.
6 I often find comfort and companionship in the presence of animals or even vermin, sometimes.
d6 Flaw
1 I am suspicious of strangers and expect the worst of them.
2 A scandal prevents me from ever going home again. That kind of trouble follows me around.
3 I resent people who don't know the struggles I had to go through to survive, especially citizens of the upper class. Anyone who is better off than me is probably just waiting for the chance to gloat about their riches.
4 My hatred of my enemies is blind and unreasoning.
5 I have trouble trusting my allies.
6 I've been mocked for much of my life, and therefore I assert dominance by mocking others before they can do the same to me.
