You were a foundling and taken in at a local orphanage. Your ancestry and parentage are something of a mystery, but no one has ever cared enough to investigate. You are, after all, one of hundreds of orphans made every year by the tough circumstances of your world.
As a child you were always in trouble: late for supper, caught stealing sweets from the bakery, out after curfew, acquiring valuable items... that weren't yours.
But your skills improved. By the time you had grown to be a young teenager, you were adept at sneaking and hiding from the Orphanage staff, learning the secrets of others, and exploiting all of it to your benefit.
You discovered you had a knack for the arcane. Through concentration, experimentation, and practice you learned some of cantrips and put them to work to your benefit.
Eventually your luck ran out. You were caught 'acquiring' something that belonged to a respected local wizard. Shocked and horrified, the orphanage staff turned you out onto the street with nothing but the clothes on your back.
But the wizard saw your potential, decided to take you in, and made you part of the household staff. In your time off, you've been trained in the arcane arts. Off the record, you've begun to 'acquire things' on behalf of your benefactor... and have become a valuable asset in the wizard's enterprise.

You know how to get messages to and from your contact, even over great distances; specifically, you know the local messengers, reliable caravan masters, and sailors who can deliver messages for you.
