Dark Lord Image

“Dark Lord” is the name others whisper for the one who keeps a hard kind of order. You hold sway over a small domain; a holdfast, a ward, a hidden network, or the people who move within it. Your path might be inheritance, ruthless ambition, a fallen virtue, or a binding pact, but your craft is the same: you trade in loyalty, secrets, and leverage, aiming for results that last. You see the world in greys and reward competence, even in former enemies. Some wear cruelty openly; others call it necessity. Decide the face you show: a masked regent, an iron steward who made a rough quarter quiet, or a penitent tyrant who believes harsh peace prevents worse evils. Whatever the mask, your will shapes the ground you stand on.

Skill Proficiencies: Choose two from the following: Deception, Insight, Intimidation, Persuasion, or Religion.
Tool Proficiencies: Forgery Kit or Thieves' Tools.

One of your choice.

A set of fine clothes; a signet ring (bearing your personal sigil); one simple weapon; an evil or cursed trinket; a satchel containing 30 gp.

Origin of Evil

Why did you take this path? Roll or choose.

  1. Blood and Title. You inherited a dark legacy; lands, oaths, and enemies included.

  2. The Usurper. You seized a crumbling holding and made it prosper through fear and efficiency.

  3. The Fallen Hero. Once a paragon, you embraced hard choices until virtue became a mask.

  4. The Bargain. An infernal, fey, or eldritch pact raised you up; and holds a lien on your soul.

  5. Revenant of Grief. Tragedy broke you; control was the only cure that worked.

  6. The Architect. You believe order is mercy and that only a single will can deliver it.

  7. Masked Regent. You rule through proxies and rumour; your true identity is secret.

  8. The Heir of the Underworld. A syndicate chose you as “chair” for your ruthless competence.

Feature: Influence over the Darkness

Your name carries weight in disreputable circles and makes common folk think twice before crossing you.

  • Among commoners and local functionaries, people are reluctant to bar your way, deny you basic services, or report you to the authorities unless strongly pressured. They’ll try to keep the peace around you, provided you aren’t actively harming them.

  • In criminal networks, you can reliably find a fence, fixer, or safe house in most settlements that host organised crime. The DM decides the exact contact, but you can secure a meeting within a day and request rumours, introductions, or minor favours that don’t risk the contact’s life.

  • Limits. Organised militias, paladins, religious orders, and similar powers will move against you if you overreach. Mindless creatures and beasts don’t respond to your reputation.

Using This Feature. Treat this like the criminal contact or bad reputation style of ribbon: it opens doors and generates leads, not automatic success. The DM is encouraged to pair it with meaningful complications (see table below).
