Once a member of one of the most esteemed Samurai families, Xiao-Mei became a soldier during the war against Koryo when he was injured and abandoned by his men during a losing battle.  Left to die on the field of battle by the Koryoan army, a young Koryoan woman saw him struggling on his hands and knees, so she took kindness on him and took him home.  She nursed him back to health, tending to his wounds, both emotional and physical.

Once healthy, he promised to take her home with him.  Once they reached his men, he would be able to secure her journey back home where he intended to make her his bride.

Risking their lives, they journeyed in search of his battalion.

They found them.

Rather than being welcomed home with open arms, his captain had him arrested for consorting with the enemy.  

She was publicly executed.

That night, his best friend and cousin helped him escape.  He warned him to leave and never return home.

This was easy for Xiao-Mei.

He was a man without a country.
