You have spent your life toiling away in the mines, by the sweat of your brow digging up the earth’s precious metals and minerals for trade. Perhaps you were born into a family of miners, working with your kin to supply your village. Maybe the job was a means to an end - a way out of an undesirable circumstance that force you to take up a life in the mines. Regardless of how you began, you soon fell in love with the caverns and the earth, the art of crafting tunnels and the beauty of the gems and minerals that provided bounty to your village.

Compelling Tale

You can tell a compelling tale, whether tall or true, to impress and entertain others. Once a day, you can tell your story to willing listeners. At the DM’s discretion, a number of those listeners become friendly toward you; this is not a magical effect, and continued amicability on their part depends on your actions. You can roll on the following table to help determine the theme of your tale or choose one that best fits your character. Alternatively, work with your DM to create your own compelling tale.

d8 Compelling Tale
1 Mole Wrestling. You fought in hand-to-hand combat with an immense mole.
2 It Collapsed the Cave. You encountered an underground creature of monstrous size whose movements caused the caves to begin collapsing around you.
3 Map to Gold. You once dug up an ancient map leading to a supposed treasure beneath the earth and another minder stole it.
4 Ghost. You are haunted by a ghost from the mines that only you can see.
5 Nemesis Mimic. A large mimic containing a gemstone the size of your head claimed one of your fingers before slipping away; one day, you’ll find that mimic.
6 It Erased the Darkness. You once saw a creature in the caves who emitted a light bright enough to make the caves appear like they were in daylight.
7 Dig into the Abyss. You found yourself in an underground cave leading to the Abyss, and your luck has been sour ever since.
8 Love Story. You fell in love with a creature from the Underdark, but your brief romance ended tragically.

You gain advantage on ability checks made using Jeweler's Tools, Mason's Tools, or Smith's Tools. If you have access to a cavern that has natural resources, you can maintain a moderate lifestyle while working as a miner, or smith, and you can earn enough coin, or barter your minerals, to feed yourself and up to ten other people each day.

Suggested Characteristics

Miners succeed only if they spend time at their jobs. As such, most miners have a strong work ethic, and they admire others who earn their living honestly. Miners tend to be superstitious, forming attachments to particular pieces of equipment or specific caverns. They have a connection to the earth in which they work, and they think poorly of those whose actions adversely affect their livelihood.

d6 Personality Trait
1 Working in the mines taught me one thing. There’s no place for slackers. Everyone has to do their part.
2 The solution to most problems is a strong arm, not tricks or magic.
3 Don’t hurry. Bring in the timbers and prop up the shaft before you dig that next tunnel.
4 The common people suffer so the rich have their luxuries. Maybe it’s time to change that.
5 I’ve spent so much time underground that I have forgotten the niceties of life.
6 I left a poor miner, but I’ll return with enough gold to buy every mine in the kingdom!
d6 Ideal
1 Companionship. No one has excavated a mine alone. Only by working together can we accomplish great things.
2 Patience. I don’t get frustrated easily. I’ve dug enough mine shafts that led to nothing to know that not every attempt will lead to success.
3 Hard Work. I don’t look for shortcuts. I do the job right the first time.
4 Never Quit. I’ve seen dwarven miners smash through the hardest stone. If they can do it, then so can I!
5 Sacrifice. Some must suffer so that others may thrive.
6 Improvement. The most beautiful diamonds require the steady hand of a jeweler to make it shine.
d6 Bond
1 I will return to mines a hero and prove everyone wrong.
2 I’ve seen too many people die, and I won’t let another companion die because of my inaction.
3 I will get revenge on the foreman who caused my brother’s death!
4 I’ve seen horrors in the deep mines, and someone has to protect the rest of the world from them.
5 I have debts that I can never repay, but I’ll do my best!
6 I will always stand against tyranny whether it’s a slave trader or a king!
d6 Flaw
1 The desire to acquire more gold, more gems, and more wealth drives you to go further and dig deeper often without regard for the safety of yourself or others.
2 You saw something in the deep tunnels. Something terrible. You don’t want to go back.
3 After a hard day of working, I enjoy a hard night of partying.
4 I pocket the occasional "treasure" from the mine when I think I can get away with it.
5 You are far too curious for your own good and that’s gotten you into trouble more often than you’d like to admit.
6 I escaped from a mine disaster that I was the cause of.
