Shadow Courier Image

Some courier guilds limit themselves to just delivering goods and messages.

This guild of "shadow couriers" have no such limits and are known for delivering all sorts of messages, including (but not limited to) contraband, threats - and the occasional assassination.

You are a member of this shadowy couriers guild, skilled in a particular field of "messages". You are a member of good standing - so long as you keep your dues paid and your crimes coverable. You learned your skills as an apprentice to one of the Couriers or a Postmaster, under the sponsorship of your guild, until you became a master in your own right.

Skill Proficiencies:
  • Choose two from among Deception, Sleight of Hand, and Stealth.
Tool Proficiencies:
  •  Choose one from among one type of a disguise kit, a poisoner's kit, a forgery kit, or thieves' tools.
Languages:
  • Thieves' Cant (if you already know Thieves' Cant, choose one language of your choice).
Equipment:
  • One of your choice from: a poisoner's kit, a disguise kit, a forgery kit, or thieves' tools; a set of traveler's clothes; a backpack with a hidden compartment; and a small pouch with 10gp. You also have an ink pen, a scroll case of loose papers, and a bottle of ink. Finally, you carry proof of membership to this guild in some fashion, usually hidden as a sigil, tattoo, or some other marking on your person or belongings (DC 25 History or Investigation to recognize the guild's symbol).

Special Deliveries

Every shadow courier has their preferred type of "delivery," and the guild's Postmasters are nothing if efficient in assigning the best people to the job. Choose the delivery type you prefer, or roll on the Criminal table.

Feature: Guild Membership (Paid in Blood)

As an established and respected member of the guild, you can rely on certain benefits that membership provides. Your fellow guild members will provide you with lodging and food if necessary, and pay for your funeral if needed. In some cities and towns, a guildhall offers a central place to meet other members of your profession, which can be a good place to meet potential patrons, allies, or hirelings.

Guilds often wield tremendous political power. If you are accused of a crime, your guild will grant you protection from the legal repercussions (provided they have a presence in the city). You can also gain access to powerful political figures through the guild, if you are a member in good standing. Such connections might require the donation of money or magic items to the guild's coffers.

You must pay dues of 10 gp per month to the guild. If you miss payments, you must make up back dues to remain in the guild's good graces. If you're able to leave the guild in good standing, you may opt to continue paying some dues for continued protection (at least from past crimes). Work with your DM to determine how much protection you can reasonably expect from the guild, and how much it will cost.
