A half-elf woman cuts through streets with her head down and her cloak's hood up, seemingly ignored. A dwarf eyes the man opposite him in the street as they seemingly walk at the same place. A halfling woman urges her party to push onto the next town as they carelessly linger, knowing that staying in one place too long means people learn your name. The Tormented Traveler does not run from their past, nor confront it; they bury it down deep and let it guide their every decision. To be the Tormented Traveler is to distrust and to find solace in constant change.
- Skill Proficiencies: Due to constant travel and paranoia that something will go wrong, the Tormented Traveler has learned to protect themselves through keen and silent observation. Some Tormented Travelers have also learned how to read people relatively well. Others have learned how to manipulate others and take what they need.
Choose 2 of 3 Proficiencies:
Perception, Insight, Slight of Hand
- Tool Proficiencies: Unfortunately, the Tormented Traveler does not stay in one place long enough to learn how to use a tool well enough to be considered proficient in wielding it. They do, however, have enough experience training to defend themselves in the case that something does go wrong that they are proficient in one simple weapon.
Choose Proficiency in One Simple Weapon
- Languages: The Tormented Traveler is extremely well traveled and can pick up one additional language of their choosing.
(Players also have the option to pick up two additional languages instead of one, under the condition that they only choose one skill proficiency instead of two.)
As a tormented individual, citizens of the towns you're visiting will take pity on you and offer you discounts and kindness if you sell them a sad enough sob story. (Roll advantage on a deception check.) However, they will only give you their pity if you are traveling with less than two people (you and one other creature). When traveling with 3+ people, everyone in your party must roll a d6*. If the total is less than the person you are trying to persuade's insight check, the person becomes hostile towards your party.
*The d6 becomes a d8 at level 12.
Suggested Characteristics
The Tormented Traveler does not trust easily and often refuses the help of others.
