Broken Villain Image

Once upon a time, you were a force of evil to be reckoned with. Knowledge of your coming could cause an entire village to flee, your voice would cause the bravest of warriors to cower, and your very name caused people to shudder and huddle together. But no more. Somehow  your power was broken, and now you walk the worldd a husk of your former self.

 
Skill Proficiencies: Expertise in intimidation
Tool Proficiencies: One martial weapon of your choice.
Languages: One language spoken by your preferred type of henchmen. (can be exotic)
Equipment: A martial weapon (one of your choice), A set of dark colored clothes, a relic from your past (unique helmet, unique amulet, signature staff, glowing tattoo, etc.), and a pouch containing 5gp.
 
The Fall

You were a powerful villain until your power was broken. Choose or randomly determine the event which caused your fall.

d10 The Fall
1 The source of my dark power abandoned me in my time of need.
2 A powerfull Paladin smote me with their holy blade, but instead of finishing me off they healed me.
3 I willigly turned away from evil and my power dissapeared.
4 My right hand man has overthrown me and taken my place.
5 An Angel of the gods confronted me. I thought I was doomed, but the Angel smiled at me, stole my power, and told me I could thank it later before dissapearing.
6 The patron who granted me my dark power ordered me to do something so horrible even I couldn't stomach it.
7 A party of adventurers confronted me after spending the last several years struggling against my dark machinations. They prevailed in the final battle, but my last contigincy worked and saved me from the clutches of death.
8 My plan to fake my own death went horribly wrong.
9 I had spent years gathering power, doing research, and otherwise preparing to confront a god, slay them, and take their place in the pantheon. The god won.
10 I... I don't remember what happened. Last thing I remember was sitting in my dark lair, then I wake up in a tavern with a drink in my hand and all my power gone.
 
Feature: A Name to be Feared.

Once upon a time, your name carried such weight that the sound of it would cause a room to fall silent. Warriors fled and villagers quaked at your passing. Cities would throw open their gates and beg for your mercy as you approached them. You have fallen far from those days, but such power is not easily forgotten. You may call upon the power of your name to further your goals. Be it to run off some ruffians, gain an audience with someone important, or some other purpose. Any doubt can be quelled with you preventing the Relic from your past, but most are inclined to believe you. After all, who'd be dumb enough to pretend to be you? Be warned, you made many enemies in your heyday, and all would leap at the chance to kill you should they learn you yet live. Be careful how you use your name, you might just get the attention of one of them.

 
Suggested Characteristics

A Broken Villain is not some common bandit or tyrant lord. They were among the greatest evils that plagued the world, someone who's name is burned in history as long as there is people to whisper it. Whether they are still evil or walk the path of redemption, their past is stained with rivers of blood and marred with overwhelming darkness.

d8 Personality Trait
1 My laughter is quite unsettling, so it's a shame I love to laugh.
2 I spent so long at the top it feels invigorating to actually be in danger again. I love the adrenaline rush, and will intentionally put myself in situations where my life is threatened if I grow too bored.
3 I don't ask, I command.
4 If it's a choice between drama and efficiency, I choose drama every time.
5 I am incapable of feeling threatened or intimated by anything I face. I am the stuff of nightmares, what have I to fear?
6 I am actually a really nice person, the whole "Dreadlord of Darkness" thing was a misunderstanding.
7 I cannot abide the prescence of any evil that doesn't work for me. This world is mine to plunder, no one elses.
8 I do nice deeds in secret. I am no longer the evil I once was, but I do have a reputation to uphold.
d6 Ideal
1 Power. Having strength gives you the right to do whatever you want.
2 Hope. My past is so stained with blood no amount of good deeds can scrub it clean, but I'm gonna try anyway.
3 Redemption. If I can turn away from the path of evil, so can anyone. All they need is someone to show them the way.
4 Fate. Everything I've done and will do is because fate willed it to be so.
5 Anarchy. No one should be able to weild the level of power I once commanded.
6 Order. My methods may have been questionable, but the order I brought was worth any price.
d6 Bond
1 People though I was the master, but I was just the pawn of something far darker. They thought I was bad? They ain't seen nothing yet.
2 The only thing I love in this world is my pet. If anything happened to it, I would not rest until the entire world was burning and the gods themselves begged for my mercy.
3 There was one hero I fought again and again. Sometimes they won, sometimes I did. Now I've fallen in love with them and I don't know what to do.
4 I will make up for the evils of my past, or I will die trying.
5 When I was young, I had a vision of a terrible calamity destroying the world. All the evil things I had done was in an effort to prepare for it. I will stop it at any cost, or at least save as much of the world as I can.
6 I will reclaim my dark power and my dread throne, and then I will cast the world into an age of shadow so dark that the light of good will never shine again.
d6 Flaw
1 I bury myself in my vices in an attempt to silence the screams of my past. It doesn't work.
2 My arrogance overshodows that of any other man or god.
3 I am incapable of trusting others.
4 Part of me hopes that some wayward hero would come and finish me off.
5 I am prone to bouts of madness.
6 I will do anything for power.
