You've grown up as the ward of a well-regarded and influential local lord. You have no memories of your birth family, but the lord always treated you as his own, in spirit, if not in title. You've experienced all the comforts and privilege of someone of high station, having not to worry for anything and receiving a fine education. While not titled yourself, many in the aristocratic circles of your region know of your connection to nobility and treat you accordingly. Yet the favour of your lord can only carry you so far. With no prospects to inherit but a yearly income, you'll need to make your own way in the world, perusing a career and position in a knightly, military or religious order.
- Skill Proficiencies: You are proficient in two of the following: Athletics, Intimidation, Persuasion. You may choose one between Arcana, History, Nature or Religion, if appropirate for your noble education or order.
- Tool Proficiencies: One type of gaming set or musical instrument
- Languages: One of your choice
- Equipment: A set of fine clothes, a set of traveller's clothes, a signet ring, a surcoat representing your place or rank in the order, a travel version of a game or instrument you are proficient in, and a purse containing 15gp.
Feature: Ear of Influence
You are no one by yourself. But you have the ear of an influential man and while you do not bear his title or name, enlightening others to your connection might change their attitude. Similarly you wear the vestments (or at least the novice vestments) of the order you belong to. People who know who you are (or who you belong to) welcome you in high society, and people assume you have the right to be wherever you are. The common folk make every effort to accommodate you and avoid your displeasure, and other people of high birth treat you as a member of the same social sphere. You can secure an audience with a local authority if you need to.
Suggested Characteristics
Raised with all trappings of wealth and access as any other noble, but none of the responsibility or power, can be a blessing or a curse. On the one hand some people of the aristocracy see you as second hand nobility, if nobility at all and you are bared from title and inheritance. On the other hand you've experienced privilege and a freedom to choose your own destiny foreign to many of your class. Joining an order gave you a new set of direction and responsibility.
