Formed By Betrayal Image

Once upon a time, you trusted people. You believed in people with all your heart. That naïveté was quickly stomped out by someone you once held dear to you. Whether it be an attempt at your life, social outcasting, or something else entirely, you’ve been forced to live in the woods with no one else around except for the creatures that roam within. You listen to goblins chatter and wolves howl every night, resting in whatever place you’ve decided to make your home. You’ve grown bitter, thinking over and over about how those bastards left you to rot here all alone— you’ll never trust anyone again, you tell yourself. It’s an anger festering within you for years to come, and you’ll make sure that everyone pays for what they did to you.

Skill Proficiencies: You know a lot about the forest and how to survive in it, being that you’ve had to live there for most years of your life. Choose one between Animal Handling, Athletics, Medicine, Nature, and Survival.

You’ve been planning your revenge for years— of course you’ve had time to hone your skills and see what tactic you like the most! That’s what any sane person would do, right? Choose one between Deception, Intimidation, Perception, and Persuasion.

Languages: You’ve picked up some stuff from the creatures of the forest, and you’re pretty sure you know most of what they’re talking about by now. Choose a language that you would hear a creature from the forest using.
Equipment: You have equipment! Well, it’s mostly what you had before you got oh-so-rudely kicked out into the wilderness, plus some other things you managed to find, but hey! It’s equipment!

One set of Commoner’s Clothes (A bit torn, which is to be expected from living out in the forest for this long), A bit (1d4) of Gold, and a Dagger.

Feature: Empathy from the Trees

The woods know your woes. They’ve held you in their arms for years now, they know of every night you’ve spent sobbing over what once was, every moment of pure unbridled rage, everything. They want to see you grow to trust again. Forests and the creatures within will act more friendly towards you— you may not find poison ivy in your path, and docile creatures may lead you back to the path if you are lost.

There’s only so much the woods can do to protect you, though, so be careful.

Suggested Characteristics

Betrayal shaped who you are. How do you respond?

d6 Personality Trait
1 I look visibly sorrowful from years of mourning what once was.
2 I’m playfully rude to my fellow adventurers to show I do care on some level.
3 I absolutely adore animals and will stop to try and pet all of them, regardless of if they’re dangerous or not.
4 I’m stone-cold and serious, only focused on revenge.
5 My fellow adventurers are sometimes worried about my health because they’ve never seen me eat. I don’t trust them enough to have meals in front of them.
6 I like to pull small pranks on my fellow adventurers, just for fun. It’s so hard being cooped up in a forest, you’ve gotta have some fun at some point!
d6 Ideal
1 I will get my revenge, I need to get my revenge. I don’t care about anything else, I don’t care about anyone else, as long as I can finally feel fulfilled by striking down everyone who has ever wronged me. Not even if my friends have to suffer. (Evil)
2 Some part of me still wants to trust people. And maybe, just maybe, I can find people who are worthy of my trust. Someday, I’ll find people who I can rely on, and then I can finally die happy. (Good)
3 I just want to get out of the forest. I want to visit a town, I want to see things. I don’t care if I learn to trust again, and I don’t care if I doom millions by doing it. I just want to be free. (Neutral)
4 All I really want in life is to cause a little mayhem! It’s my way of taking revenge— pulling tricks and laughing at the misfortune of fools who fall right into them! Who cares if I’m hurting people, it’s fun! (Chaotic)
5 I want to find the person who betrayed me, and I want to show them what they did to me. I won’t resort to murder, and I sure as hell won’t do anything like torture. I just want them to look at what they caused. That should be enough. (Lawful)
6 I want to find a place that I can call home. Whether it be all by myself, with people I’ve learnt to trust, or full of the corpses of my enemies, I just want to feel secure again. I just want to sleep in a big, comfy bed, just like I used to. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 Seeing even the littlest of animals get along, I can’t help but smile at least a little bit. This world might be cruel, but nature brings us hope.
2 Sometimes, I daydream about there being someone out there that’s just right for me, romantically or platonically. I’d like to think soulmates exist— and that I have one, somewhere. That brings me hope.
3 I hear distant music from somewhere in the forest sometimes. I’ve never been able to find the source, but somehow, it feels like it’s meant just for me. Though I know that it’s probably just a trick, I can’t help but feel a little bit of hope.
4 Whenever someone tries to show me kindness, I can’t help but feel a little guilty for distrusting them immediately. I know that I’m not supposed to trust anyone ever again, but seeing the hurt in their eyes makes my heart ache.
5 Sometimes I’ll come across a dead animal in the woods, the stench of rotting meat hitting my nose and making my eyes tear up. The thought that this was just a normal creature, minding it’s own business before this, makes my heart ache.
6 I know that there’s no one out there who could stand me. I know I’ve grown bitter, and I know I’m so incredibly unpleasant to be around. And it makes me wonder if anyone will ever look at me and see a friend. The fact that no one will makes my heart ache.
d6 Flaw
1 I pull cruel tricks on my fellow adventurers, just to see if they’ll still stick around after I do so. When they don’t, I tell myself it’s their fault.
2 I refuse to talk to anyone who even looks like the person who betrayed me. I can’t stand the memories— the sight of those eyes looking at me makes me want to vomit.
3 I’m so dead-set on getting revenge and showing the world my wrath that I don’t realize I’m hurting the people I’ve grown to care about until it’s too late for me to take it back.
4 I react violently to any sort of inkling that I’m going to be left behind, betrayed, or abandoned. I just can’t let that happen again that I lash out, desperate to not experience that pain ever again.
5 Animals and children flinch when they see me. I’ve become a distorted, disturbing version of who I once was, and that fact haunts every single part of me.
6 I wish that the world would burn and everyone in it would die. I’m so full of spite that it’s clouded my vision completely, turning me hateful and furious at anything that moves.
