Hermit - Ex-Soldier Image

You lived in seclusion — either in a sheltered community such as a monastery, or entirely alone — for a significant length of time. In your time apart from the clamor of society, you found quiet, solitude, and perhaps some of the answers you were looking for.

Before your seclusion you trained as a soldier, studied the use of weapons and armour, learned basic survival techniques, including how to stay alive on the battlefield. You might have been part of a standing national army or a mercenary company, or perhaps a member of a local militia who rose to prominence during a recent war.

At some point, some life altering event caused you to leave the organisation for a life of seclusion.  What was it?  Did you drop everything and leave immediately or did you set your affairs in order first?  Did you leave on good terms with your former allies or did you cross them when you left?  Work with your DM to determine which military organisation you were a part of, how far through its ranks you progressed, what kind of experiences you had during your military career and the reason and circumstances of your departure.

Life of Seclusion

What was the reason for your isolation, and what changed to allow you to end your solitude? You can work with your DM to determine the exact nature of your seclusion, or you can choose or roll on the table below to determine the reason behind your seclusion.

d8 Life of Seclusion
1 I was searching for spiritual enlightenment.
2 I was partaking of communal living in accordance with the dictates of a religious order.
3 I was exiled for a crime I didn’t commit.
4 I retreated from society after a life-altering event.
5 I needed a quiet place to work on my art, literature, music, or manifesto.
6 I needed to commune with nature, far from civilization.
7 I was the caretaker of an ancient ruin or relic.
8 I was a pilgrim in search of a person, place, or relic of spiritual significance.

Feature: Military Ties

You retain an insignia of rank from your days as a soldier.  Depending on your reason for leaving your former military organisation, you may still be able to use this insignia to gain some benefits from them, such as influencing soldiers of lesser rank, or requisitioning simple equipment.  Likewise, if you left on bad terms you may be branded as a traitor and attacked on sight.  Discuss these details with your DM.
