Most scholars work in the library surrounded by long forgotten books of lore and history. You know that's not going to find new knowledge, only field work is going to make that happen. You have left the comforts of your monastery, college, or library to find the true history of the world. Your journey takes you into dangers both monumental and small, as you battle horrors of the dark and diseases that rage in fell places. However, you always take comfort in knowing that what you do will forever change how the world views itself.
- Skill Proficiencies: History, Investigation
- Tool Proficiencies: Calligraphers tools
- Languages: Two of your choice
- Equipment: A leather-bound diary, a bottle of ink, an ink pen, a small knife, a set of traveler's clothes, and a component pouch
When you choose the Adventuring Scholar background, you can roll on the Academic Discoveries table to determine a notable discovery or experience from your academic past that continues to influence your adventures.
d8 | Academic Discoveries |
---|---|
1 | Ancient Manuscript: You discover an ancient manuscript that reveals the location of a long-lost civilization. Your current goal is to find and explore this site. |
2 | Mythical Creature: Your studies led you to encounter or learn about a mythical creature thought to be extinct. You seek more information and possibly a reunion with this creature. |
3 | Forbidden Knowledge: You uncover a piece of forbidden knowledge that haunts you. It could be a dark ritual, a prophecy, or an artifact's location that you wish to either protect or destroy. |
4 | Academic Rival: You have an academic rival who constantly tries to undermine your work. This rival pushes you to new heights but also brings complications. |
5 | Lost Artifact: You found evidence of a lost artifact of great power and historical significance. Finding it could change the course of history, for better or worse. |
6 | Esteemed Patron: You have a wealthy or influential patron who supports your research. In return, they expect results and may call on you for aid. |
7 | Unexplained Phenomenon: You observed an unexplained phenomenon that defies current understanding. Your goal is to investigate and explain this mystery. |
8 | Cryptic Correspondence: You received a series of cryptic letters from an unknown sender, providing clues to a hidden secret. Deciphering these messages could lead to a great discovery. |
You've spent many hours working deep in the bowls of the library, reading tombs of forgotten lore. These hours have thought you about the things adventurers often encounter. Once per day, when you would make a skill check to learn about a creature, you can attempt a Intelligence (history) check with advantage instead of the standard check normally performed to learn about the creature.
Suggested Characteristics
Adventuring scholars range from teachers to researchers and their experiences in these jobs before creating the people they are. Time in the lab or library have forged their hopes, dreams, and mannerisms. This time away from their fellow man has also forged biases and other bad character traits that can come to the surface under stress.
