Engraving is the skill used to carve intricate designs, symbols, and text onto various surfaces such as metal, wood, stone, and bone. This skill can be used for artistic purposes, functional purposes (such as creating runes or magic inscriptions), or for crafting items of significant value.

Progression and Improvement

Characters can improve their Engraving skill through practice and experience:

Proficiency: Characters can become proficient in Engraving by selecting it as a skill during character creation or by training during downtime. Proficiency adds the character’s proficiency bonus to Engraving checks.

Expertise: Characters such as Rogues or Bards can choose Engraving for their Expertise feature, doubling their proficiency bonus for Engraving checks.

Training and Practice: Characters can spend downtime practicing Engraving. After spending 100 hours of practice, the character gains a +1 bonus to Engraving checks. This bonus can stack, up to a maximum of +3.

Magical Assistance: Characters can use spells like Guidance or Enhance Ability to temporarily boost their Engraving skill checks.

Engraving magical items requires both skill and knowledge of magic. The process can enhance the item's properties or add new magical effects. Engraving magical items has specific costs and level requirements:

Basic Magical Items (Uncommon): DC 15, requires proficiency in Arcana and Engraving tools, and at least 1st level spell slots.

Intermediate Magical Items (Rare): DC 20, requires proficiency in Arcana and Engraving tools, and at least 3rd level spell slots.

Advanced Magical Items (Very Rare): DC 25, requires proficiency in Arcana and Engraving tools, and at least 5th level spell slots.

Legendary Magical Items: DC 30, requires proficiency in Arcana and Engraving tools, and at least 7th level spell slots.

Costs: The cost of materials and magical components for engraving magical items can vary. Here are general guidelines:

Basic (Uncommon): 100 gp

Intermediate (Rare): 500 gp

Advanced (Very Rare): 5,000 gp

Legendary: 25,000 gp

 

 
Skill Proficiencies:  

Basic Engraving (DC 10): Carving simple patterns or inscriptions on a surface without much detail. Examples include basic symbols, letters, or borders.

Detailed Engraving (DC 15): Creating more intricate designs, including detailed images or complex patterns. This can also include basic magical inscriptions or runes if the character is proficient in Arcana.

Masterwork Engraving (DC 20): Crafting highly detailed and artistic engravings that require a high level of precision. This can include complex magical inscriptions, enchanting runes, or pieces of art that could fetch a high price.

Legendary Engraving (DC 25): Crafting legendary-level engravings that could include powerful magical runes, exquisite works of art that could be considered masterpieces, or intricate designs that require exceptional skill and patience.

 

Tool Proficiencies: Tools used in Engraving include carving tools, chisels, and possibly jeweler's tools for finer work. Proficiency with these tools grants advantage on Engraving checks.

Success: A successful Engraving check on a magical item enhances the item's properties or adds a new minor magical effect (DM's discretion).

Failure: A failed Engraving check can result in the following:

Failure by 5 or less: The engraving fails but the item remains intact.

Failure by more than 5: The item may be damaged, reducing its effectiveness or potentially nullifying its magical properties (DM's discretion).

Cost: 25 gp

Weight: 5 lbs

Components: Assortment of chisels, carving tools, small hammer, magnifying glass, jeweler's loupe, and polishing cloths.

Usage: Proficiency with this kit allows you to add your proficiency bonus to Engraving checks. The kit is required to perform any detailed or masterwork engraving.
