Once created for the purpose of guarding an ancient treasure, you waited patiently for adventurers. They entered your lair, you delivered your riddle or quest, and upon their failure; despite your Lawfully Good nature (at the time), you slaughtered them without mercy. You often felt a sense of sorrow at your grisly task as your only other company was a small library of books. After hundreds of years you claimed countless innocent lives whose only crime was curiosity.
Upon entreating your Creator for explanation as to why none could be given mercy, your claws weary of being coated in adventurer blood, Your deity simply laughed. You had been serving a callous and sadistic monster. So, you left the lair, the treasure and your duty. The deity was intrigued by your actions and, rather than kill you, stripped you of your time and space bending powers, reducing you to a base mortal coil. But, they could not strip your mind... Now, you follow your own path, not constrained by the wills of capricious gods.
