Kidnapped or sold to the Ebon Crown as a child, you were raised in a competitive environment where only the best survive. Throughout your formative years, your memories of your past life were suppressed, and all that you know is the Ebon Crown and your Handler. They trained you how to live a double life so that you can walk amongst the population unhindered and when the time is right, don the battle uniform and carry out your orders as dictated within the contact provided by your handler up to but not limited to, assassinations, espionage, and smuggling (good or persons).
Characters with the Ebon Crown Operative background don a disguise—literally or otherwise—as they adventure. Sometimes your disguise is detailed within the contract, other times it is left up to you to craft one. Most operatives have a default persona that they revert to when not on a job. Whatever the case, it is your duty as an Operative, to distance the Ebon Crown from any jobs you take and to leave no trace of their involvement, unless of course it is specified within the contract. If for whatever reason you are discovered, it is your duty to destroy any evidence of your association with the Ebon Crown and to make haste to the nearest safehouse and await further orders. This of course has yet to ever happen.
As a member of an adventuring party, you might find it more difficult to pursue a contract that doesn't fit with the group's objectives – but on the other hand, you can complete tougher assignments with the help of your companions.

Faceless Persona
A faceless character adventures behind a mask of a public persona. This persona is as natural to them as their hidden, true face, but it disguises their identity. Roll on the Faceless Persona table to determine your persona, or work with the DM to create a persona that's unique to your character and suits the tone of your game.+
Dual Personalities
Most of your fellow adventurers and the world know you as your persona. Those who seek to learn more about you—your weakness, your origins, your purpose—find themselves stymied by your disguise. Upon donning a disguise and behaving as your persona, you are unidentifiable as your true self. By removing your disguise and revealing your true face, you are no longer identifiable as your persona. This allows you to change appearances between your two personalities as often as you wish, using one to hide the other or serve as convenient camouflage. However, should someone realize the connection between your persona and your true self, your deception might lose its effectiveness.
