Whatever the reason, you've been traveling between worlds, and, on a larger scale, universes. One day you may visit a universe where people have just begun to learn to make fire, and the next you find yourself amongst people of an advanced utopia. However you learned to get around, you may or may not keep it a secret.
Perhaps you embrace the wide variety of cultures, or maybe you shun them, bringing your own religion to worlds it would've never been heard of. Maybe you let the world work as it pleases, perhaps you integrate yourself in, taking over and altering the story of entire universes. The choice is up to you, adventurer.
- Skill Proficiencies: Survival, Persuasion
- Languages: You can learn any two languages you choose (at the DM's discretion). Consider choosing languages your character was submerged in during their travels.
- Equipment: A set of common clothes, a dagger and 20 feet of rope, a trinket OR a set of clothes to remind you of a world you visited at some point, a belt pouch containing 15 gp (or a foreign currency.)
The folk who wander the space between universes, picking their way through the massive network combining them, have all kinds of reasons for being there in the first place. Some sought out the ability to for evil pursuits, others to try and fix the evil of the worlds. If you'd like, roll on the table below for inspiration!
| d8 | Purpose of Travels |
|---|---|
| 1 | You are an acolyte for a religion of your choosing, sent to spread the word. |
| 2 | You were introduced by another traveler, and have continued your work ever since, for better or for worse. |
| 3 | You stumbled across a tear in the fabric at some point in your life and were awed by the possibilities. |
| 4 | A friend was taken to another world, or you suspect such an event, and studied for ways to get them back until you reached this point. |
| 5 | You were simply bored and spectated the happenings of other universes for your entertainment. |
| 6 | You've studied the prospect of interdimensional travel for years, and have finally achieved it. |
| 7 | You wanted to heal worlds, make a change in places, and be a light. |
| 8 | You wanted to conquer worlds for yourself. You wanted power or acknowledgment. |
You're weird, put lightly. You've picked up traditions foreign to whatever world you're in, and maybe they've left a physical mark on you in the form of missing pieces, additional vestigial body parts like antennae or small arms/wings, perhaps even a tail. Whatever the reason, you catch the attention of people for your appearance. Nobles may invite you in to show off to guests. They'll provide lodging and food so long as you perform as an oddity. Those of certain, poor origins may view you as demonic and throw their worldly possessions at you to banish you, or at the very least get you to leave. Might get some free food, or a sleeping bag, or rope, or a free hat, some extra gold, a random knickknack, who knows, is your DM feeling gracious?
Suggested Characteristics
People of this background tend to be weird and understand they're different from the majority of the population for their tendency to hop from world to world, or the scale of their ability. Some view themselves as above people for the life they lead, while others work as civil servants. Others still are thieves, stealing ideas and technology from other worlds and marketing it as their own. And again, some are just bored and along for the ride each world brings them.
