Erlang-Shen was a celestial deity born with a third eye by Princess Yunhua, the Jade Emperor's sister, making him the nephew of the Emperor. Princess Yunhua had an affair with a mortal, breaking the rules of the Celestial Court. This mortal was Erlang-Shen's father, who was executed and Princess Yunhua imprisoned under Mt.Tao. Erlang-Shen then cleaved the mountain open with his axe, successfully saving his mother. He then agreed to serve the Celestial Court as long as they spared his mother.
