Far-Touched Image

Prolonged contact with the chaotic, incomprehensible energies of the Far Realm has twisted your body and mind. Your experience with that horrific place left a permanent mark on your physical form, manifesting as various mutations, deformities, and a general sense of "wrongness."

While your grasp on sanity is tenuous at times, you can't help but feel like you are on the cusp of something Greater...

Skill Proficiencies: Choose two skills.
Languages: Choose two, one of which must be Deep Speech.
Equipment: A monster hunter’s pack (containing a chest, a crowbar, a hammer, three wooden stakes, a holy symbol, a flask of holy water, a set of manacles, a steel mirror, a flask of oil, a tinderbox, and 3 torches), one trinket of special significance (choose one or roll on the Horror Trinkets table after this background), a set of common clothes, and 1 sp.

Feature: Mind of Madness

Your physiology has been irreversibly altered. Those who take this background can take feats from the Aberrant Mutation feat list provided they meet any other prerequisites and their DM approves. Additionally, you age only 1 year for every 10 years that pass, and can hold your breath for up to an hour. NPC's may react unpredictably towards your uncanny appearance.

Suggested Characteristics

You have learned to live with the madness that torments you. You are a survivor, who can be very protective of those who bring calm and stability into your chaotic life.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I don’t run from evil. If I am to die now, at least it will be with my mind intact.
2 I write uplifting works of fiction in my spare time. It's an effective bit of escapism, and helps take my mind off the whispers.
3 I spend money freely and without concern for the consequences. Money can't save you from the abhorrent things I've seen, but at least it can help you forget for a while...
4 The thrill of battle is one of the only things that still feels "sane" to me. Or perhaps is it merely a lesser form of insanity.
5 I don’t talk about the thing that torments me. I’d rather not burden others with my curse.
6 I expect some crawling abomination to be lurking in every shadowy corner.
7 I refuse to return to that nightmarish place, and I will not allow anyone else to fall victim to it's horrors if I can help it.
8 I put no trust in divine beings, for there are things far above them.
d6 Ideal
1 I try to help those in need, even if they are afraid of me at first. (Good)
2 I will do whatever I can to fight back the nightmares that haunt me, and become whole again. (Any)
3 I slaughter abominations to make reality safer for everyone, and to steel my own resolve. (Good)
4 If you had seen what lies outside of reality, you too would come to realise that "order" is the greatest illusion of all. (Chaotic)
5 Despite what I've seen and experienced, I still wish to do what I can to uphold the delicate order of reality against the entropy beyond. (Lawful)
6 To create a better world, sometimes lives must be sacrificed. I for one am more than willing to sacrifice any number of you, for the greater good of course. (Evil)
d6 Bond
1 I keep my thoughts and discoveries in a journal. To most it looks like the scrawlings of a madman. Maybe that's all it ever was...
2 I would sacrifice my very being if it meant none would ever be exposed to that terrible place or it's inhabitants again.
3 I was trapped in that wretched realm for so long, that the people I once cared for are nothing more than fond memories and dust.
4 A terrible revelation nearly broke me, mind and soul. I hope I can put a stop to the terrible destiny I forsaw.
5 I can hear the whispers. I cannot understand the soft, incomprehensible gibbering, but every now and then, I think I hear my name being called...
6 I have seen what's truly lurking out there. If I don't do my part to protect the reality I call home, who will?
d6 Flaw
1 I experience vivid, chaotic dreams. When I wake, it is often with a cry of terror, a howl of rage, or the laughter of a madman, much to my compatriot's chagrin.
2 I don't truly trust anyone, and I am persistently paranoid that they may not be what they say they are.
3 I feel little concern for the dead. They are at peace now, but we must fight on.
4 I have a crippling addiction to Laudanum. It helps to soothe my fractured mind. I know I have a problem, but I just can't stop myself.
5 I am all too eager to share the horrifying revelations to which I am now privy, whether anyone is ready to hear them or not.
6 I hear nightmarish murmers no one else can, and sometimes find myself trying to converse with them without realizing.
